I was wondering what is the farthest anyone has traveled searching for a lost treasure. This spring I am going to travel to an ederly gentleman's place who has some stuff I want to look at. During our conversation, he said he had something that Allis Chalmers built from the 20's. He says it has wheels on the front and track on the back. He said it is buried under junk, but it is there. The stuff I'm going to look at has nothing to do with tractors, this just came up in coversation. I wouldn't even consider it, but it's located in Wisconsin, so there's always a chance. So this will probably be a 500 mile goose chase, but it's fun.  A few years ago, a friend saw this auction bill that had a WD listed on it. It listed the serial #. He looked up the # and it was the last one built. Only problem it was 400 miles away. I told him to call the auctioneer and double check the serial #. He didn't want to, because he didn't want them to know the value. So he drove the 400 miles, when he got there the serial # wasn't anything close to what was listed. When he asked the auctioneer about it, they didn't know where the serial # came from.  They almost had to call the sheriff to get him out of there, he was kind of mad. Just wondering how many others have went on wild goose chases.

terry, you're not supposed to be coming to my state to steal things!!   Just kidding, as far as the longest trip I have went on for AC stuff is the D19 I just got in Nebraska.   11 hours one way.   Made for one long weekend.   The closest for me was a 8' snap coupler disk that I went about 6 miles for.

You know Terry i always wanted to go to Russia seems allis sold over 10 of those units to the Russian army in 1916. Probably scrap now but who knows.

I went to eastern Nebraska, about 525 miles, for a D17D one time and when I got there the guy changed the price by $300.  I told him I would only give him what he had told me first.  He then told me "You would travel all that way and go back without the tractor" and I said you bet!  It doesn't cost anything more to pull the trailer empty.  I got the tractor for the first price! 
The closest I've ever gotten was a sc disk 1 1/2 miles from home.  Phil

Almost made it out of England last in Mar. when Uncel Bill & I where over visting with Mark and Dave E.if it would not been for the geese making alot of noise I would have gotten away with it .LOL
The longest trip for me  on land was 3200 miles round trip  when I bought my 20-35 Long fender.2600 miles for L 15-25 .about 2700 miles for E 18 -30.

Just pulled a 4500# trailer 1200 miles to SD and back hoping to bring back a corn picker from my dad, but it was in worse shape than I remembered...so wound up just hauling a 750# mower. I could of found some other stuff to haul back, but my wife had to get back here by a certain time. Kind of a waste of trailer space and fuel. Next trip I will travel alone!

Probably the farthest for me was a trip from our house to Cape Giradeau, Missouri for our first snap coupler dirt scoop we purchased.  Made the entire trip in one day, ended up being 16 hrs round trip.  Ran into some snow along the way as well as almost hitting a heard of deer across the road left us scratching our heads wondering what we were doing.  Of course after getting that one, we found a bunch more a lot closer to our house.

Drove from 45 minutes north of Madison WI to Snead AL to look at JD 8400.  Ended up buying it, about 13 hours one way, I believe.  Also bought AC 220 from north east OK sight unseen, as guy seemed decent and price was good.  Drove and hauled back another 220 from near Fargo ND.  Also bought another JD 8400 from Cambellsport WI, only 2? hours away.  Was bought off JD lease by a dealer in Mississippi and headed that way if I didn't buy it.  Semi was sitting on lot waiting on my decision.  Also bought an AC 8050 from near Zumbrota MN in 1996 (was crop scouting that summer in souther MN).  went home and got dad.  He drove it home, about 13 hours by tractor.

Another long trip was when I bought my D21 puller from just south of Detroit.  We left in afternoon with truck and trailer.  I made it to Ohio before needed to fuel.  Fueled up, drove up to get tractor, loaded it up, and made it back to IN border.  Told friend with me I needed a nap.  We fueled up and he took over.  I wasn't asleep long and he said we needed fuel.  Lasted about 1/2 what it should have.  We didn't even make it to IL, and I don't think I had more than an hour of sleep.  Wouldn't tell me til a few years later, but someone passed him at about 100mph, and he pulled behind him and put the pedal down!  Was my cousins truck, and it was chipped.  Put it on level 5 (MAX) and she screamed the whole way.

Went 880 miles one way to get this D17 IV Diesel with factory three point from eastern Nebraska to Kaysville Utah.  Was a long ride back.  Must have been all uphill on the way home until the middle of WY.  Made sure to never miss a gas station.

Longest trip so far has been for a G in Enid OK. Made it in 13 hours down and back. Good news was the tractor had hydrolics, axle extensions and factory extended air cleaner tube. Bad news was the people didn't tell me it was stuck really bad and needed a $750  crankshaft. 

Thats a good looking D 17.

When I first started looking for my early model straight One-Ninety I drove nearly 400 miles and when we got there it was an XT, some just don't know the difference and don't care.  I never made that mistake again after that I always asked if it had a turbo on it or not.

I drove to Ocalla Florida for my WD45 Distillate, the north of Cadillac Michagan to pick up a 40 combine. Then a couple of months ago, I took a trip to Wisconsin to pick up a 445 AC loader, then back through Nebraska to pick up a factory power steering unit for a WD45.  Looked at a 45Diesel that was only 3 digits off from my 45D, but the tractor was much too rough to put $3500 in. I got a set of half tracks for my 45, but Fred delivered them to Hutch, so that really doesn't count.  The closest was a D19D that I put a 500 loader on that I drove by for 25 years 5 miles from the farm, drove it home.

Working night shift so we left at midnight to go to the middle of minnesota to get our M7 Snow tractor. Got back the next day at 5. Quite the trip you can not believe how many people were looking and asking what the snow tractor was. At a McDonalds i caught 3 vehicles stopped to look at it and a lady was taking pictures of her kid sitting in it. Was a good trip

my wife and I drove 16  hours to Pochontis Iowa to an sale just to get an old neon dealer clock that the auctioneer said wouldn't work in Canada.( it keeps perfect time in Canada on our fireplace mantel) thxchuck

I rode my Harley to Massachusetts....Brockton MA which is just south of Boston for an F350 Dually I bought on Ebay.....loaded the bike in the bed of the truck, drove home, grabbed some sleep and was up the next morning to be in my buddies wedding....his wife wasnt impressed with my choice of time for the trip either.....

My farest drive was to Lowndes, Mo., it was 800 mile round trip from Plainfield, Illinois. I came home the proud owner of my A.C. 5 ton running gear. My family and I saw some of the most beautiful counrtyside along the way!

The furthest wild goose chase was over 1000 miles for a genuine Allis IB pintle hitch. The fellow swore up and down it was, except he purportedly did not own a camera. I sent letters and pages from the parts book, with stamped self addressed envelopes for return mail, which came back asserting that he had what I wanted.
 
So, I headed out in search of.
 
It was not.
 
We made a vacation out of the rest of the trip, as I was in that deep already.
 
I probably logged 10,000 miles, and who knows how many nights in hotels, until I finally tracked the real thing down.
 
Needless to say, I own them now.
 
 
 
Other than that, the most embarassing goose chase was convincing alan(nj), LouSWPA, and my friend Albert, to trek across the state of PA for an Allis trove I had been assured was available.
 
All we got was a couple partial carcases and an old Ford plow.
 
I will probably never live that trip down.
 
At least alan got a WC at another stop, and Lou got a plow he sold me later. Albert got the Ford plow and I got a lump of scrap and a couple wheel weights.... I just wish they had told me to only bring one trailer.

I drove from Eastern Iowa to Edison, New Jersey where I'd arranged to rescue a Case VAI TLB in the back of a wooded lot.  When I got there, it was not accessable, as the property had been sold, the new owners could not be contacted, and the access had been fenced.  That was about 1800 miles round-trip.

Fortunately, I did it amidst a company assignment, driving a company truck, pulling a company trailer... and instead of coming home empty-handed, I bought an all-electric Sheperd 5-ton overhead crane built in 1920.
