Will the PTO with hydraulic pump off of a later model B fit a 1938?  I am looking at buying a used woods belly mower, but it is setup for hydraulic lift.  The parts for  the manual lift are way expensive from woods, so I am thinking about piecing together a hydraulic lift system from a later model B to go on my '38.  Will it work, and what else do I need to lift the mower?  Pictures of the brackets and such for the hydraulic ram mount would be really helpfull.

Just a thought, but I used my Woods mower several years without hooking up the hydraulics for lifting it.  I just set the height with the hanging chain, and then never really had a reason to change it.  I eventually found a NOS hand lift setup on eBay.

Yes  the PTO housing will interchange. The Woods drive pulley for the early B's is differant than the later ones. Depends on the taper of the shaft. When I bought a New woods the manual Lift kit was $264.00 and worth every penny. I have a hydraulic lift O my CA and I replaced the Ram with a straight piece of pipe I don't use it. I prefer the manual lift. you can raise the deck without having the blades running. As long as you install the lift spring that comes with the kit, My wife can lift it with one hand. With the hydraulic lift the blades must be turning to raise the dack. Make sure you get the guide wheeles also. You'll love the way a woods cuts the grass.

Early B's didn't have the lobes on the shaft to run the hydraulic pump. I think you have to change everything from the tranny back. My 38 B has a depth control lever for the plow drawbar which works well for lifting the mower deck. I have no spring (sometimes wish I did) and wouldn't think about putting a hydraulic lift on for the mower. The only time I lift the mower is going down the road or if the grass is too tall to cut at the set level. A hand lift can be set high for mowing without raising it all the way up and like Dave says, you don't need the PTO running to lift it.

Can the lobes be see with the plate removed?  I have a 38 but think the rear end had been changed to a newer since it has foot brakes rather than hand brakes? I saw a B hydraulic unit on ebay the other day.

Thoughts?

TexasB,
Yes, if you mean the plate that covers the hole for the pump. Foot brakes can be added without changing the rear end.

Do you know if both brakes on the B have adjustment outside the rear housing - only one of mine is showing adjustment capabilities.

The lobes are on the power take off shaft not in the transmission but can be seen thru the hydraulic pump mounting hole in the housing. Any housing that has the bolt on delete plate will have the lobes on the shaft.

Dick, your right. I meant to say from the rearend back not from the tranny back.

You can easily tell if you have a PTO without the pump.  The ones without the pump will have a round plug on the RH side - facing front.  The ones with the lobes will have a rectangle or square cover with bolts holding it on.  That is where the pump goes.
Good Luck!
