Just a couple quick questions on tires for a WD. I am putting a 2 row mounted corn picker permanetly on my WD. The picker itself weighs 1850 pounds. Almost 1 ton. Would 4-ply tires be acceptable for this additional weight? The manual says to inflate the rear tires to 14 Lbs. pressure to compensate for the additional weight.
Also, The tractor came with 14.9 x 28 tires on it, both tires are junk.
I figured that these would be too wide, because the 2 snouts, that mount in front of the rear tires could possibly hit the tires if they are too big. Would 13.6x28 tires be small enough?( I have 10" rim widths, at least thats what it looks like) Or does this not matter? I guess I don't really have another picker close by to look at, I am just going by pictures in the manual.
Any input on this would be helpful. Thanks!

if it weights 1850 pounds is only close to 1 ton, not 2....and I dont see why those tires wouldnt be sufficient. As far as the 14.9's Im not sure if they would fit turned clear in or not.

Ya, I was kind of hoping 4 ply would get the job done. But I will go to 6 ply if I need to.

Either way, tires are an expensive habit....I have a WD45 here Im debating if I want to rebuild the engine just because the tires are shot......

Years ago dad put 170 picker on a WD and its weighted 3600lbs on 13.6 tires and never had any trouble.

Gramps/Dads 1953 WD-45 (S/N 146867) currently has 13.6 x 28 tires and has had that size since the beginning. It carried a #33 picker right up to the late 1960's. Saw that tractor over Christmas, verified the tire size and even noticed that the picker brackets are still on the rear drop axles. Tractor is still used; in fact dad is 86 and had the clutch pedal bracket LENGTHENED since he is shrinking!

for years I run my 33 corn picker with 14.9 and had no trouble with them. the 2 snouts will have cleance at lease my did on the wd

Before I go fetch my 190 picker for the WD45 I need to swap rear tires. Right now it has some 16.9X26's on Gleaner rims. I'm going to put on the worn 16.9X28's on spin-outs that used to be on my 180. Will repaint the centers orange for the 45 but it will have the newer style eccentrics. They currently are filled with fluid...planned to keep some of it in the tires to make it less top-heavy...not sure if I should leave it all in or pump half out....yes I know the tractor will be heavy but it's not going pick over a load or 2 year at most unless some neighbors suddenly want some custom work done. Did you see what the ply rating was?
Do you guys think 4 ply tires will be ok then?

Where do they put the ply thickness on the tire? Sidewalls and tread? Or just tread?
Still debating on some nice 13.6x28s with 4 ply, they still have 75% tread left, firestones. $150 each.

I bought new 13.6x28 Firestone field and road tires for my WD-45 with mounted #33 picker and they are just fine with 14 psi pressure. At that price for 75% tires you shouldn't go wrong. That is half what I paid 2 years ago.

I think that if you put up some good tires, like what continental tires and other brands can compensate you. I'm sure that things will be okay and it shall be well in the future.

Our early WD was equipped with 12.4 tires and Dad put new 13.6 tires on it back in about '66. The bigger tire made it so we had to slip the hand clutch a whole lot more while picking corn. Where the corn was heavy, you slipped that clutch by the hour....WD45 is slower in first gear and would have made a better picking tractor.
14.9 will fit but think they would be to fast unless it was last years of the WD with helicut trans gears.

Well, funny this post came to the top of the forum today.
I just finished mounting my rims back on the tractor last night, and planned on putting those $150 Ea. tires on the rims, this coming Friday. Well, those plans changed fast.
I was looking them over last night, and noticed that one of them has a 4-5" slice down the sidewall. Needless to say, I am not a happy camper.
I was told by my local TIRE DEALER, thats these tires were in good shape. I actually explained what I would like to do with the tractor, and if the tires would work for my mounted corn picker. He had a little concern about the 4 ply, but said it should be ok. Never one word was spoken about the slice on the tires.
I thought I was getting a good deal, from the firestone dealer. Wrong.
The tires will be headed back soon.

I just thought it was ironic, that today it came up, and those tires I thought would work, did not.
Anyways, I ended up biting the bullet on new tires. 13.6 x 28, 8 ply. $315 a tire.

For what it is worth one of our last sales was a D-14 Industrial with a Henry Backhoe and Loader. The tractor came through with 4 ply tires. After reserarching the weight being carried and the pull on the tires with the front end loader I suggested to Pop that we should change out the tires for 6 ply tires. Needless to say we did not. Later the owner said that the tires burst through the sidewalls. Weight and Torque caused that.
Now that it appears that you have a chance to change and since the weight will always be on the tires I would carefully think about 6 plys.

Thanks Bill! That is interesting that the Industrial would come factory with 4 plys. I ended up going with 8 plys and they should be here by the weekend.

As expensive as any new tire is, it won't pay to be cheap, especially with that picker on there. You may cringe when you pay the bill, but you won't be sorry down the road!
