I hope some of you guys are old John Deere knowledgeable.

I have searched the internet until my eyes are sore and gone down so many time-consuming rabbit holes that I have barely found my way back.

No matter how I search, all I can come up with are Model W, C, and LUC; plenty of each of those and none of anything else.

Everything I find has the air cleaner or the stack or both in the wrong places.

This has the original John Deere 2-cylinder horizontal engine configuration.

It is powering a huge vertical shingle mill.

Can anyone properly identify this power unit, please ?

Might be a tractor that someone chopped ip to make a PU. You need to ID some components, then trace back to the tractor it comes from...Wink

With a B_____ part number on the bottom radiator tank, I'd say it was a power unit using a B tractor engine.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

This is in reply to all three of you guys (I couldn't figure out how to multi-quote)

I had considered the possibility of this being a repurposed tractor and the more I look for a purpose-made power unit like it, the more I believe it is one of a kind.

Due to the "B" parts casting, I will pursue the John Deere "B" angle first.

Well, that didn't take five minutes once I had the "B" clue.

The first thing that came up was this March 2016 VIDEO of this exact same unit on the same farm where I photographed it last weekend.

I do believe that it is a one-of-a-kind as it is the only John Deere "B" power unit that I am finding.

One curious thing is the smooth radiator front; every example of a "B" tractor I saw has JOHN DEERE prominently cast onto the upper portion of the radiator. 

Also, all of the tractors have the breather and exhaust routed through the hood; whereas, this machine has them coming up beside the hood.


What do you think about that hydraulic starter ?

These people have a vast collection of vintage tractors, equipment, hit-n-miss engines, and both industrial and agricultural machines.

I have been to many large shows that had far less to see than these people can pull out of a single barn and they have numerous barns.

Thank you guys for helping me solve this mystery.

NOTE: I have made numerous attempts to make the link to the video work; I cannot find any way to go into "advanced" edit or a true BB-code editor to clean up the mess I have made of it.

The unique hydraulic engine starter is worth the extra trouble.

Thanks for fixing that.  

It works fine and took me right there.

What do you think about that hydraulic engine spinner/starter ?

I bet that guy on the skid-steer (or is it a loader-tractor) came up with that and designed and made it himself.

If you move the radiator back a foot and cut the front end of the frame off... there is no room for the muffler and air cleaner under the hood any more... JD B
