With the tornadoes that hit southern Illinois and Kentucky and surrounding areas I thought about looking back and it was 14 years ago in May when that town was destroyed. Sure doesn't seem that long ago.

Tornadoes can do a tremendous amount of damage with very little warning. Fourteen years is not that long ago.
Just an old country boy saved by the grace of God.

Tornadoes come fast and leaves fast and do a lots of damage. I was driving semi up I 71 from Louisville, Ky. to Cincinnati, Oh. when that tornado went up through there and hi Xenia, OH. We could see it bouncing along to our night and they was telling everyone to get off the road. My buddy was ahead of me and we went on in to a trucks stop south of Cincinnati before we stopped, listen to the radio talking about it hitting Xenia.

There are probably forum members more aware of present-day Greensburg than I am. The town was 98% destroyed by an EF5.  We drove through there some time afterwards & re-construction was well under way.   As I recall the Deere dealership was one of the first to commit to staying & rebuilding.  I think the population is holding its own.  People don't often mention the Joplin tornado which had a high casualty number.

As Dennis says, Greensburg is doing OK... one of their 'name to fame' is the largest/ deepest hand dug well, and it was, or the buildings were re-built new so it is still a great tourist trap / attraction.. The John Deere dealer is going strong... movie theater is going, as far as I know along with an old time fountain with sasparilla, I think.

I was in the AF Reserve @ Forbes AFB in Topeka at the time of that tornado.  One of the Dr. officers in our medical unit filmed the approach of that tornado from the stairwell of his apartment bldg. Probably not one of his wiser decisions. No videos in those days.  I was commuting to meetings from the KC area. I don't think his bldg. was hit but it was too close.
