My buggy is becoming more and more tempermental as far as a VERY loose gear shift lever in the "column" . More and more often I have to "pull-up" on the gear lever to engage the starter What type of "fix" am I looking at $$ wise and is something that can be "remedied" in my driveway with "basic" tools ?? Thanks

It all depends on where the linkage is worn out. If it’s mostly in the linkage that is buried in the steering column, it may be best to have a service center to the repair. If it’s more on the linkage down near the tranny, there it’s possible to do your self. It all depends on the make, model, age, etc., of the vehicle.

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

The shift linkage in the column is incredibly simple. There’s a clamp that gets loose and a bushing that wears out. The hard part of the repair is pulling the steering wheel.

I got a beater 2001 that dealer redid the shift column to fix the tugging to get it to start. It made it better but not perfect
