Followup on my previous post. The D17D is blowing smoke again!!! New Piston/Sleeve in #4 hole and rebuilt head. Sounds as pretty as it did before the #4 intake vale seat fell out and destroyed the piston, intake valve, and sleeve. Time for it to start to earn it's keep; haaying season is here and it will be running a round baler for the next several weeks.

It's blowing clear; except when it's throttled up, or pulling, then it blows some black out the stack.

Did you have the pump off while you fixed #4? (pump timing) Don't happen to have a dirty air filter do you? Did you check the cam? My series 1 diesel had 2 lobes that were more than half worn off. It always smoked a little until it had just enough load to warm up.

Did not remove the injector pump. Removed front end, oil pan, inj lines/injectors at the head, and removed the head. Removed rod bolts, pushed # 4 piston out, pulled sleeve, cleaned up the hole/O-ring grooves and reinstalled new sleeve and piston. After re-assembling the engine, I primed the fuel pump (removed the bleeder screw on top of the fuel filters) and left the injector nuts a little loose. Turned engine over and when saw fuel leaking from most of the inj nuts; tightened them up and it started within 5 turns of the engine. It runs real good and the rain cap stays level at idle; don't suspect worn cam lobes. I am looking for a new thermostat for it as the engine does not warm up (gage works when set the sensor end between exh manifold and intake water manifold.

Sorry, no dirty air filters; it has an Oil-Bath air cleaner, and has one of the earliest diesel engines in the Series I line.
