There is a flat head screw that goes onto the magneto drive gear that is in the tractor, what is its purpose, and can I get away with out it if I'm careful.

When I took mine apart I did not have the screw. When I reassembled the tractor the mag seemed to have a lot of drag. I installed the screw and it works fine. Just my experience.

I forgot which board I was in!

However without the screw you can cause this to happen. the screw is to keep the gear from pushing into the governor housing.
