Hey guys I just picked up a B. That is still set up with a 6 volt system.

One of the headlights will come on and off if you tap the housing. And sometimes it comes on very dimly. What should I look at?

I don't understand this 6 volt system.

Thanks

^^^ This.

The lamp is probably grounded through the mounting bracket. This is a common place where ground connections go whacky.

Normally that can be cleared up by removing the light and cleaning the rust off. There is a short wire inside that grounds the bulb that could not be making good contact with the housing. Take it apart and see what is going on. Learning time! Even us old duffers can't learn any younger.

Ok.
Time to dig in.
12v doesn't bother me. But this 6v stuff has me baffled.

Only difference between 12 and 6 volt, is the voltage. Everything still works the same. Must have power and ground for things to work. 1.5, 6, 8, 12, 24 volt don't matter.

could be filament in the bulb is bad and when you tap on it it bounces around and touches each other where it welds itself together and works, I would start cleaning and replace bulbs, or you could take out bulb and ohm through it

The reflector is supposed to ground to the case of the light, so the problem could be internal.

On the old machines it usually the ground that goes bad. They use a case ground and every piece between the light and the battery ground has to be clean to complete the circuit. The best thing I've found is to run seperate grounds to each light. a easy check is to run a jumper wire from you battery ground to the light case. if it burns clean then you can assume the circuit is not complete.

Connection problem whether ground or power. Sometimes the sockets get corrosion in them not allowing the bulb to make good contact. Other times it could be as simple as the grounds like the guys mentioned. Either way, easy fix! Don't let the 6V throw ya. Same as 12V cept' a little less voltage, and a little more amperage. Same principal applies.
If you pigtail connections are all corroded from age, we offer a nice wiring repair kit for the B,IB,C,CA model Tractors headlights.
