How much noise is normal for a CA drive train, (transmission, rear end, final drives)?
Mine makes a whinning growling noise when in 4 gear driving on the road. I am beginning a tear down for painting and thought if I need to get in the gears now would be the time. Thanks, Tim |

I would suggest you try to get a feel for bearings and end play in things before you pull it all apart. Timken taper bearings will run loose way longer than they will tight, but gear noise increases with excess slop. That being said, spur gears in the finals can and will howl some no matter how good the gear is, more noticeable running in 4th gear.
A good cleaning and snugging up any loose points with new gear lube may quiet things down some. |

My '52 CA has always made noise in 4th. Not really a growl - more like a "whishing" noise. I'm sure "whishing" is a technical term. My memory only goes back to about '62 when I was 5. That's about the time I started driving it.

My CA is pretty quiet. Both WD 45s are also pretty quiet. My C however has a lot of gear noise. Dads C And WD also had a lot of gear noise. The CA and WD 45 both used constant mesh transmition. The sliding gear transmition used in the C and WD were a lot noisier.
