I am currently trying to replace a few parts in the upper main gear cluster of my 185 and have a couple of questions:
1) does anyone know what the thread size is for the puller bolt that is used to remove the upper gear set ?

2) also, does the bearing retainer ( see pic -w- my finger ) come out through the front with the gear assembly, or, does it have to be taken out from the rear ?

Any advise would be appreciated, too bad the darn smaller gears won't clear the lower countershaft gear as this would have been a lot easier fix!

Finally, does anyone see anything else that should be replaced? I am going to replace the third gear and the coupling for sure as it does jump out of third now when you get a load on it. I have already replaced the shifting fork and the rod that it slides on as it broke ( the rod ) earlier.

The bolts you are talking about have to come out so the pinion shaft will come out the back.
There is no puller to remove the gears. May need a pusher to push pinion out the back.

topshaft  requires axle and differential to be removed first

pinion goes out back and may require a pusher or a few taps with block of wood

why are you pulling apart?  input splines look good, cant see third but usually those two are the ones needing replaced not first or second
