the reel bats and arms on a 60A All-Crop? Were they orange or were they plain wood color? What kind of wood were they made of? I'm making new bats and arms for one of mine, and I want to do it right.
Thanks!

Don't know for sure but ash would be my choice. If you could get some fence boards, it'd be 'old growth', tight grain, tougher than nails....

I'd use white oak, and paint them orange...

they were orange until wear caused the paint to disappear. I've seen several use thin plywood, but they don't last, and they warp real easy! if you can get thin ash or white oak that would be better! and seal them with a laquer.

Thanks! I'll see if I can find either of those at the lumberyard. My next question is what are the correct measurements of a bat? I would go and measure them myself, but the bats have been missing for probably 20 years or more!
Thanks |

I think they were 1/2" thick, maybe a tad less. Ask tom yaz, he's the expert...

Hi Creston. I have several NOS ones at home and they are all orange. I can't measure them for a day or two because I'm in Boston right now. Should be able to get back to you by Sunday. HTH. Don Jr.

They are orange, my father bought one new in about 1955 and I spent many hours combining oats, wheat and soybeans with it behind a WD and later a D17 in 1960. They were about 3/8" thick and I would use the quarter sawn part of the board if you make them, that wood would be the most stable.
