I have a d17 s IV diesel that is building up alot of pressure in the coolant system. I just had the radiatior recored about 2 months ago and i left the thermostat out. However it some how builds up pressure and keeps poping the cap. We tried different caps nothing. Before i bought the tractor it had a head gasket replaced is it possible someone plugged one of the coolent ports. Im stuck any in put much appreciated.
Thanks, Doyle

You have a cracked head or blown head gasket. Wish I could give you better news......

Ditto on the leaking head/gasket. The real bad news is there is a good chance that the sleeves have dropped in the block. Pull the head and check the sleeve stand out. The specs on the original blue prints say flush + or - .002. Experienced A-C dealer mechs say + .002 which I agree with. Measure your sleeves when you get the head off. If they've dropped in the block, just well plan on an overhaul.

I should add that just putting a new gasket on the dropped sleeves won't hold long...

I hate to add to any bad news but if the sleeves are at spec be sure wipe them clean and check for cracks, this is very rare but when I worked at an implement dealer one of the other mechanics just rebuilt an engine that soon after started pumping water out the overflow. We ended up finding a crack liner. I'm not firmilar with the Buda engine as to weather the sleeves are wet or dry.

You can re-cut the shoulder in the block and add a shim to get your sleeve up above. AC had a tool that did the job with a in-frame block, although out-of-frame would be ideal.

How long has the head gasket been in the tractor? Did they put the right 1 in? Mine got the wrong 1 put in and wound up costing me a complete overhaul. |

If i loosen the radiator cap would it be okay to snowblow with this winter or no. I really need this tractor as for the 190xt block cracked and the 5040 injector pump pooped out. |

Depends on how much air is being pushed into the cooling system. I have a leaky head gasket that pushes air at idle. I just don't run it at low idle. At higher rpms, say above 1000, it will fire and pass on to low pressure on that cyl. and does not affect the cooling then. If you are pushing air at operating rpms then you'll push so much air into the head that it will not cool and then will surely crack the head.
