Hey guys was mowing with the little IB a few weeks ago and I noticed the sickle was really dull. It has been welded up many times and I think its finally time to look for something new. I was wondering where a guy might find a new one or look for one? It is a ford sickle mower with a five foot sickle. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Blake

Just buy a new cutter bar from a Ford-Newholand dealer.

Just knock the old sections off with a 5 lb hammer with the bar supported loosely in a heavy vise, then rivet on the new sections. I always found that was easier than trying to grind the sections sharp, without a special sharpener and jig.

Your mower was built by Detroit Industries, who made industrial mowers for many brand tractors. They were unique because they were the first mower without the wooden drive bar and they could be operated in any position. Road crews liked them because they could cut low hanging branches off of the trees as well as cut below the road grade. Bob

I would just pull the sickle out and sharpen it with a 4" angle grinder. Also make sure the serrated ledger plates are good on the guards (they can be replaced) and that the sickle is being held close to the ledger plates.
