What's involved in replacing the front seal in a 226 gas? Do you need to take the whole front off to get access?

Front crank seal. I guess the cam shaft seal should be replaced at the same time?
I have a oil drip from that area which I am assuming is the crank seal. Looking at the manual I see that a special alignment tool is required. Wonder what dealer cost would be to replace it? |

There is no camshaft seal in the front, unless you are reffering to the entire front cover gasket, and if it is leaking weaping, then that would be the time to do it. I know of no special allignement tool, but then again, I don't always read to manual when working on these ol girls. Your biggest thing will be moving the front steering bolster out of the way, and supporting everything properly while you have it apart. This is not a spare tire jack kind of repair, you need a couple good quality jackstands, a good floor jack, and to be safe an overhead chain hoist, but others have done it with less and survived.

The cover is not a precision fit so you can bolt it up off center to crank.You can pretty much "feel" where it fits and tighten up.Recommended to use a sleeve over crank to align but dad put many together back in the day using the "feel" method and never had a problem.I did my 45 last year the same way. No problem yet.I'd bet that's how most are done.

you can get the front seal off by prying out old seal and putting new back on crank and use old seal to send it home

I just changed the seals on my WD. The newer front seal has a felt seal to keep the dirt away from the crankshaft seal, so it is longer and sticks out far enought to poke a pry bar or large screwdriver through it and pop it right out. I oiled the crankshaft, and used an awl to keep the rubber portion of the seal straight, and worked it right back on. Used the old seal and a deep well socket to tap the new seal in place.

Well I took off the front PS unit and support and this is what I have. Do you still think it is the crank shaft seal, or the oil pan seal? Also it looks like I am getting oil out from the Gov. cross over tube?
The oil that is coming out drips from the bottom of the cross member where the tube support is from the PS Unit. It is engine oil as I have Hydraulic oil in the PS unit. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

well your half way there, i would put all seals in , or pressure wash off and run a few minutes and see if it leaks

In the top pics it went in the left corner, I would say you have a pan gasket leak.......but might as well do frt main and the rest of them.....you are there now

I think the oil from the Governor is from the throttle shaft on top, it looked like it leaked down from there.
Someone had the timing cover off before as they used permatex to seal it.
