1972 HD7GB has the 3500 series engine (turbo 6 cylinder)

turbo has a tag on it says "317 Thompson turbocharger"

One caution on checking turbos, they will have side play in the rotors and shaft as the bushings are usually free floating, that is they ride in a bath of oil on both sides of the bushing. The seals are generally ceramic and spring loaded so they maintain contact during heat up and don't tighten up when cooled down. Play can be apparent but may not be an issue.

Unless you can see hard visual as to rotor vane contact with the housing the side movement is probably normal, the worst issues for turbochargers is loss of balance and turbine rotor vane wear or erosion.

There are several turbo's that will fit on the Allis Chalmers motors. The important thing about turbo's is the trim. Turbo's are made with interchangable turbine and compressor parts. There are several turbo's on eBay sold by turbo shops for less than $200. When you purchase an official AC turbo it is much more than the prices on eBay. I suggest that you contact one of the eBay turbo shops. They could rebuild your existing turbo or build a turbo to the AC specifications. Note that the turbo's made for automobiles are specifically for that car. The industrial turbo's ( for your application ) are generic but they are trimmed for the application. If a turbo shop didn't have the AC spec they could put a turbo together knowing the cubic inch (516 cu in), the rpm range and the boost. If the turbo on my 7000 motor is typical the boost is positive but small.

my dad talked to the local turbo shop that we found.  They said $800 to rebuild it, or $650 to buy an already rebuilt one.
