I have an hd6 that I use on the farm a few times here and there. Yesterday I was pushing some gravel around and all seemed good then all of a sudden I lost the power in the right track. I can still break with it to turn using the left drive but when I try to break with the left side the dozer just stops. Wasn't doing any real hard work or hear any odd sounds. Any ideas were to start looking? Thanks Tom

Take a look at how right sprocket is sitting. Sprocket shaft can break just inside sprocket

Can be the clutch drum parts or deeper into reduction gear - all the way to the axle.
Open the cover over the brake - steering clutch housing and see what is going on there . Have seens sheared bolts of the drive flange, to bolts being put in wrong and cutting the pressure plate so it collapsed and would not apply clutch. A broken gear on any of the reduction another possibility or the axle or splines that drive it .

Well looked in the brake clutch area and didn't see anything out of place. I was thinking if a shaft was broken would I still be able to stop that side from free wheeling with the steering brake. Any more suggestions. I might just have to park it for a bit as I am just starting to put up a drive shed which will give me a place to park it inside to work on it. Very frustrating as I could really use it to level out the gravel base and lane way for shop. Oh well the joys of old equipment. Lol

Had a D6 do just what you are describing.Turn out to be the springs in the steering clutch springs were weak and stopped driving that side. Was thinking all kinds or more expensive things were going to be broken.Hope you are lucky and it is not major parts, but still a pain to take it apart and put back together.

when you pull the clutch lever for that side does it feel like resistance or same pull as other side ?
I had the pressure plate for the clutch warp or collapse from being cut by bolts , it lost all tension to clutch plates. Also if it has rusted from water it could also be a problem or so full of oil that it just slips. Raise machine off of tracks and see if you can turn that side with a bar or come along while checking action inside the clutch chamber. Is this a early machine with all mechanical linkage to steering clutches?

sounds like the steering clutch stopped driving. if you still can brake the side that will not drive then most likely that final drive is ok. check to see if the teeth on the steering clutches rounded off. could be no pressure on the plates. bad springs. check to see that the throw out bearing is releasing fully and not hanging up on the slide.

I second that on the steering clutch . my dads hd6g has done that many times especialy the right side . the teeth on the steering clutch get worn off and that side wont pull or turn. when the final went out it would make a poping sound and try to turn.

Thanks everybody. I bought a set of steering clutches for other side a few yrs ago from a gentleman in Quebec I believe his forum name was gemdozer will try to find his email and see if he still has parts. Again thanks for all replys. Might have to wait for a few weeks to open it up and give it a going over but hopefully nothing real major.

Well I pulled the steering clutch assembly out today. Wow surprised it still pulled till it did. No teeth left on the fiber disks at all. I have a good set of metal disks coming from gemdozer so all should be good to go by next weekend. Thanks to all and to gemdozer aka hector.
