I plan on pulling and cleaning the injectors on my Allis 185 before I reinstall the pump. Any tips or suggestions would be most appreciated. Also what would be the best way to clean these after I have them out?

have them pop tested, if they all pop at about the same pressure and atomize fine I would leave them alone. Never put the tip on a wire brush. To lap and clean is somewhat counter productive, have the tip replaced or have an injection service do it. The holes are so small and the unit so old a tip cleaner will not unstop the plugs. Plus the hole will have erosion and probably will prevent proper atomization . Be careful about raising the popping pressure above 3000 psi as a worn head will not pop them at slow cranking speed. Everyone has standards to go by - and live with - your budget is the key, but running an engine with a faulty tip will lead to a burnt piston eventually.

The bill for the burned piston in the 7000 I had was around $2400 (+/-) in the early 90's and I did all the labor myself. After new sleeves, pistons, rings, gaskets, machine work, etc., I still had to have the injectors tested. Four out of six were bad and one was marginal. I ended up buying a complete set. I hadn't even heard of the internet then, so I ended up paying the dealers price. |
