Hi all, new here and just got my new to me 44-45 B
Runs great carb needs a rebuild took it for a small cruise today have a binding/crunching sound from right side wheel, jacked it up, spun wheel forward and back and it’s binding up and has a sound of metal hanging up I removed the wheel, took the 4 bolts out of what I assume is the pinion shaft? The one the brake drum is on Well the putter bearing just under the cap is pretty well beat up. Being that I don’t have a replacement currently I packed it with some grease and reassembled. Quieter. My questions are what is the part number for the bearing. Is the race in that cap I removed? What is the steps to replace that bearing Thanks so much! I look forward to this group |

the above is AMAZON... you should buy the RACE too... Yes, the RACE is pounded into the 4 bolt cover... bearing is pressed onto the shaft.. You may need to HEAT or CUT to get the bearing off the shaft ... try a puller first..
There are SHIMS on the cover to adjust the end shake on the bearings ... hold the cover up to the case with bearings installed ( 2 bolts) and measure the GAP between the cover and housing.. You want MINIMAL clearance.. No "CRUSH".. here is another option - e-bay...... you can also get at NAPA or local Auto Zone.. ![]() Edited by steve(ill) - 08 Jun 2025 at 8:11am |

Both pictures show caged roller bearings, just showing opposite sides of assembled bearing.

Ahhhh thanks everyone. I understand some heat and a puller to get the old bearing off, how about going about putting the new one on?

would help to warm the bearing prior to pounding it onto the shaft.. use a pipe that fits over the shaft and sets on the INNER RACE...... The cup in the cover can be installed the same way by hammer ... Might be good to pop it in the freezeer for a couple hours to get it to SHRINK just a couple thousandths...
Then you put the cover on with 2 bolts and tighten till SNUG ... there should be a gap between the cover and case.. Measure that gap and then make up a shim pack ( gasket or steel) that is a couple thousandths THICKER... remove cover and install with shims.. See that the wheel hub still rotates EASY.. Dont want the bearing CRUSHED... Start up , put in gear, see how it sounds.

Before final assembly I would hand-pack the bearing with grease. Yes, it will eventually get lubed from the gear oil, but I don't like things to start up dry.
