What is the most hours you've seen on a D17 with a gas engine? The one I bought from my FIL has 8950 on it and the meter hadn't worked the last 5 years he used it.

A fairly high number for a gas but nothing compared to the 20,000+ that we had on our Farmall 656 gas (yes - 20,000+ with 4 overhauls and 1 engine replacement).

I can't tell you how many hours but my d17 had one motor overhaul before my grandfather bought it back it the 60s it was from the first year of production.   It ran right up till mid summer this year minus about 15 years after my uncle passed away and it put up 5000 to 10000 bales of hay every year most 10000 plus. When I got it going 4 years ago it must have been stuck and my brother broke it free before I bought it off my grandfather because this summer it when I took it apart it had broken oil rings and ring groves and rust pitting on the bearing.   From when it sat. So it ran 4 years with broken oil rings and bad bearing and was making good power pulling a 100 hp jd 930 mower.
The 226 gas is one tough motor!!!

We just got rid of one that my uncle bought back in the early 70's and the dad bought it from him around 80. It had around 6000 hours then and needed an overhaul badly. Dad did that himself and it was our big tractor for 5-6 years and had a loader on it. For about the last 10 years or so it was real low on compression and was just used as a loader tractor. But it didn't burn oil so we just kept running it and it always started no matter how cold it was. You just couldn't park it on a hill. My guess it it had 10-12000 hours. The tack quit working shortly after dad got it and said 7xxx.

The Farmall hours kinda reminds me of when my grandfather showed me the axe that has been in our family for over 200 years. Besides regular sharpenings, it has had the handle replaced 5 or 6 times, and the head once or twice....family heirloom.

That's super cool, but if it's had both the handle and head replaced, it isn't the same axe is it?

Supposedly a very distant family member has a fireplace poker my g-g-g-g-g-g-granddad made in Shenandoah, VA. He was a blacksmith.

Also....off color but granddad's '72 4020 has a working tach with over 9000 hours, no overhaul. It's a Diesel though.

With an overhaul every 6000 hours or so the engine was getting pretty loose - my brother skipped the last overhaul when he found another "good running" engine for $500. Still has the original transmission (plus or minus a few gears) and hydraulic pump. All 8 boys learned to operate a tractor on it. With a narrow front and the hills in NE Kansas it was only rolled on its side once in all those hours and inexperienced operators.
