 Topic: Custom wide fronts for pullers????

Has anyone have any pics, thoughts, or comments on building a wide front for my WD Puller. I have access to a K gleaner combine axel, and a Case combine axel. I am lookin to loose 80 to 100 pounds, if not possible, not gona convert. I wanta go to alumimun wheels also, so please share the secret.... I have got two weeks to convert!!!!

Not sure what you have now, but I can't imagine building a custom front much lighter than a stock WD front without making it out of aluminum. A stock narrow would be lighter than a stock wide, but if you want to stay wide... guess a bunch of fab work and you could get around the stock cast housing. Might even be able to keep the same gears.

You might try adapting a b wide front to it, I've seen it done several times and with aluminum front wheels you should lose a good bit of weight. You can use a corvere steering box and control arm for the b front end I think, Samt on here pulls a wd45 diesel like that and he may be able to give you some pointers on how to do it.

When we build a front axle I like to use rectangular tubing with bushing stock at each end of the correct diameter for the spindles. This allows use of the OEM spindles which will not break unless you have Bo Duke behind the wheel. It's also a nice, clean looking unit when finished. I have used combine axles in the past. For the time you spend making them fit you could build a nicer one from scratch. We use 2 X 6 X 3/16 on a 6500 - 7500 lb. tractor so I would assume you could use 1/8 tubing for a 3500 - 5000 lb. rig. To me your big weight savings is going to be how the axle connects to the fame rails. I assume your rules have some restrictions on what it all has to look like? Rack and pinion steering from a Vega or Pinto will do the steering for you.

I Made one for a WC-should be the same. If you don't make one before Tunica, I'll tell you about it. I plan to be there Thurs. & Fri. I planned to go last year, but had to cancel because of icy roads in Mo. I'll have a WC named Purebred Allis & a WD45 w/ cornpicker sidecurtains on it. Maybe we can visit a while. PS. Good picture in Hook mag.

Thx, allisanddodge. I have decided to wait on the wide front, we will be in Tunica late Wednesday afternoon to Sometime Friday, depending if we get the WC ready. If we do, we will pull Friday morning, if not we will leave sometime before lunch.

I will take a look. If not I will try to get some. The axle itself is constructed similar to a 7000 series front axle only lighter / smaller of course. In the case of a WD it would look like a 7000 series axle installed backwards with the support (yoke?) rearward instead of frontward.

This is a really quick sketch so don't make fun. It gives you an idea anyway of a front axle that pivots at the center. An even lighter weight version would be the same thing without the triangle support and brackets welded directly to the 2 X 6 X 1/8" rectangular tube that would bolt directly to the side frame rails. The bushing stock for the spindles should be angled to get the correct camber on your front wheels. Axle.pdfThe second file is a print of the support if you decide to go with a solid mount axle. It would surround the rectangular axle and be welded to it, then bolt to the side rails. 1/4" plate should suffice. Very simple, inexpensive, and light weight. Axle_Support.pdfYou can make it to whatever dimensions you choose obviously. Hopefully my crude prints will help. Good luck

I started one out of a 6T ronning gear that we narrowed up. Quit with the open class, so just kept the narrow under it. If I can get a pic of it between snow, I'll post it

i made one out of a farmall cub front axle and a ford pinto rack and pinion steering. i used 15x4 aluminum wheels from jegs. i was able to remove that whole cast front bolster. i have some pics on here of it in another thread here on the pulling forum. its the one that is for sale.

Pinto rack will work on the back side of the axle. Vega rack and pinion is another option that a lot of folks use.
