to paint an entire pickup with a rattle can?
Cause I got this rust free box from down Thad's way an before I throw my bedliner in I thought I'd give the inside floor of the box a rattle can job. It had some surface rust that just turned into clouds when I wire brushed it. Figured it's be better with some paint covering the metal.
Well that kinda looked silly so I did the inside sidewalls too. Well crap, the top rails looked a little scruffy and the next thing ya know I did the whole outside of the box on one side a brand new rustoleum finish, clearcoat an all.
I give it a score of 15. In otherwords, it looks pretty good from 15 or more feet away. I have no idea what it's going to look like outside. I'll see if I can remember how to git some pics on here...........

Can`t be any worse than the car that was painted using a paint roller out in the front yard. I seen that and I had to turn around and drive by again to make sure I seen what I seen.

I once painted a 67 Mustang(6-3speed) with a roller, a fine nap roller and it looked real good from 5' away ! Once it was hard,hand rubbed wax on it too, that really made is quite acceptable ! Old school enamel, well stirred, 'Tremclad' when it was in REAL 1 gallon cans.

An uncle of mine did a Chevy Vega with rattle cans years ago. Looked good. As I recall it took 12 cans.

After I hit an undercover cop car in an empty parking lot with my dad's '66 Impala convertible I had to do some backyard body work. Found a used fender and hood and painted them with Krylon gloss black to try to match the car. Looked pretty good as long as the sun wasn't shining too bright. Looked even better at night with the outside lights off. I would say try it if you have nothing to lose and might look good from a distance.
Disclaimer- He had originally painted it in his farm shop back when you could do that with just a Brinks gun and a simple respirator. Was a good paint job but nowhere near a factory finish.

I think that Jeff Foxworthy made a reference to this sort of project in one of his "You Might Be a Redneck" clips. I'd tend to agree with him. Darrel

I'm not so sure I would put paint down before that bedliner, a topcoat will just have to be scuffed again to get it to adhere. You should follow the instructions on the bedliner kit you plan to use. I would think a self-etching primer is best over surface rust.

It depends on what kind of bed liner he has. If it’s just a rubber mat, the paint would be good, but Bill is right, the spray on stuff doesn’t stick to paint very good. On my pickup which I got a few months ago, it had bed liner sprayed on the inside of the fenders, and it stuck to the bare metal, but as soon as I washed it, it came off the painted surfaces.

This is just a Ford factory hard plastic one piece bedliner.
I can't for the life of me figure out how to post pictures on here anymore. The icon that I used to use is gone?

I did my 79 Chevy pickup from front to back. I used a snap on handle from rattle cans. Made applying the paint much nicer.
If I do it again I think I'd put on at least 3 coats.
I thought it come out very well for the cost I had into it

Problem is, no hardener... Might chip off, BTDT, with a '68 chebby p/u. Square nose up front, and bug impacts flaked the paint right off. Might not be as bad on the back...
Then theres the guy who usedta work fer my grandfather, he painted his whole '73 chebby, wif about a bushel of spray cans of paint, he gots fer free, somewheres. Color was puke turquoise, never flaked off, fer the 15 years I knew it, just looked butt ugly, forever!  |

About 20 years ago I painted my 79 F150 with Rustoleum Ford Blue paint with a wagner airless sprayer. I know a guy who painted his JD tractor with spray cans (JD paint) and it turned out pretty nice. Pastor Mike

One of the guys at the car dealership used to paint Datsun B210's with them. He'd pick it up at some cheap store. I think he said it took 12 or 13 cans. Good luck with it.

My cousin work for a BTO who's dad bought spray cans by the case. The old man would help move machinery. If the tractor was still in the field he would grab a can and start repainting his truck as he waited.Got it all repainted about every year.
Now this has me thinking of the BTO's son who has gone big in the trucking business.Has from 50 to 500 Petes and KW's depending who you talk to. ALL OF THE TRUCKS ARE SHINNY,EVEN THE TRAILERS.They are all 2 tone no 2 that I have seen close together are the same. Michel Dusi Trucking mostly in the west but all 48 states from what I here. I bet none of these have been painted with a spray can. Some of the trucks be gray with Shameless's favorite color to accent. None of the tractors are what I would call eye catchers kind of settle earth tones. But the back doors on the van trailers are polished SS steel.
The story my dad always told of the great grandpa was that government found the basement full of wine barrels way back when that was a no,no,you know. Well them poor boys was working real hard to get that first barrel up them steeps narrow steps. So old boy being helpful tells them he has a drain in that seller so just dump them where they where. Them boys being government workers thought that was a great idea. Yes the smart ones of you already know what happens next. He had his boys with other barrels where that drain pipe came out on the river bank. Might even be how the modern wino's found blended wine could be better. An the great grand daughter has gone legit and has winery to sell it legal with all taxes payed.
Sorry Les but nobody else had run you off track here and them shinny trucks, specially when they haul bulk wine by my place in the SS steel tanks that about blind you. Oh well how far a family can get once they have a lot of money behind them.

I saw one painted with a string mop and they used latex paint. It wasn't pretty.

Now that I've got that out of my systemmmmm
Krylon works wonders. Spray kinda thick and then throw REAL FINE sand on. Let it dry and spray another coat. Put that plastic bedliner in and it'll las at least 5 years. That's how long my son's has been in and it hasn't rusted under it since. The fenders are about ready to fall off, but they weren't done in the whole deal.

Accept Shameless' deal to come help you. He's using CHEAP pink paint an it wears off after about 2 weeks....

High school senior, local shopping mall parking lot at about 11:00pm on a Friday night and racing a "friend" through the parking lot who had a late 70s/early 80s Chevy Monza with a V8. Only one other car in the parking lot. She was ahead of me when we pulled in and with the big car I was a little slower in making the turn into the parking lot. About 1/2 way across I hear a big BAM and the my car jerks to one side. Defroster didn't work so good and it had been raining so the windshield was a little fogged over. I thought I had hit a lamp post. Get out and see I had hit another car and walked over. Guy rolls down his window and I see several patches on his sleeve and is on his radio asking for an officer because some dumb, young, @#&*#@! had just hit his car. Shopping mall had hired off duty cops to keep an eye on the parking lot after the mall had closed for the night due to people racing through the parking lot. I think he had seen the Monza fly past and gave chase not seeing me coming right behind so I hit him right on the front driver side corner and I didn't see him because he had his lights off watching the parking lot. His car was mangled in the front corner and so was mine and both were drivable but when the police showed up they called my parents because the car was in my dad's name. My dad shows up and informs me that my '51 Plymouth convertible and my pick up were now his until I got the Chevy fixed up. I put friends in parentheses as, for some reason, they were no where to be found after this happened.

My uncle had an '80's Monte Carlo he painted flat black with rattle cans. It came out alright. At the time, it cost him around $10.

You're right Orange Glow, I reread the original post and it sounds like a drop-in plastic one. I was thinking spray-in the whole time. In that case, the more paint the better underneath!

make sure you have the drain holes knocked out in the front of the box, that will allow proper drainage under that box cover.be a lot less rust happen then.

My step son is a mechanic at the local school bus garage which has 84 buses, when they do some minor body work as in one of the drivers runs over a mailbox they use a paint roller to repaint the area and he says it looks better than you would think.
