It's a gasoline model with the resistor mounted near the solenoid under battery. It won't crank. When he runs a test light from ground to the terminal with one of the resistor wires it will then crank when he pushes the button. He's 45 miles from me so I haven't seen it myself. He just installed a new solenoid because it wouldn't crank, thinking that would fix it. Grounding issues? Or wires not hooked up properly? Once it starts it runs good.

The wire on the solenoid, that the picture shows being grounded, most likely goes to a switch on the clutch pedal that HAS to be closed, to complete the ground. Either push the clutch in to 'make' the switch, or replace the bad switch under the clutch, or the break in the wire going to the switch.

I would guess that its the wrong solenoid. I would think that it should have a grounded base solenoid. That solenoid probably uses one small post for its + and the other for its Neg. If so that's the wrong solenoid.
With the correct solenoid, One small wire, the one without the resistor hooked to it would go to the S terminal and would complete the magnetic coil to ground through the base to engage the contacts. The other wire that has the resistor would go to the I terminal to supply 12 volts to the coil for starting while the solenoid is engaged.

No That Is What That Wire Is For That You Take Off The Back And Put On The Front Post That Post Gives It The Extra Zap

OK thanks, I asked because I saw an old post either on this site or YT that had the same basic issue and someone commented that you would lose the extra zap for starting. It's been a very long time since I've worked on these tractors at the Allis shop. Since the early 1990's.

If you do this the power from the ignition switch that powers the coil through the resistor will backfeed the coil in the solenoid and keep the solenoid engaged any time the key is on. If you want to continue to use this solenoid simply ground one of the small posts and hook the wire without the resistor to the other. Tape off the eyelet for the wire with the resistor and leave it unhooked from the solenoid. You will just not have 12 volts to the coil for starting.

Thanks guys, I'm taking all into account. I'm for him getting the correct solenoid and throw that cheap NAPA one, assuming it's cheap.
