Odd part of that is Refineries are Self Sufficient for Power, At least the ones near where I grew up were. Refining process cannot be stopped midstream so had their own generators ran off Raw Distillates.

I figure the oil companies set the prices they want. Some years ago on the forum someone claimed that the oil companies didn't care if they made money on the gas or not as the other higher value petrochemicals made them the money. Anybody remember that discussion? I may be wrong on the post.

Johnco,
Made note of this long ago. Grandfather's BOTH were oil refinery workers, cost per barrel of crude is relegated to 1 cost of drilling, 2 cost of withdrawal/extraction from well head, amount of resource against the above expense. Saudi Arabia has low cost to drill or extract(Sand soil relative close level to grade of supply) US or Canada is drilling deep pockets and hard to extract zones so expense is higher. Next is type material, Sweet Crude has a High Volatiles level(Naphtha and stable solvent distillates) heavy crude or Bunker crudes require special Catalytic Reduction and Reformulation to produce Fuel distillates where those tend to be unstable(Sour easily) thus requires more time in a refining process and more chemical transitions also expensive. Refining uses some materials as fuel to perform the process as such loss of volume affects end pricing. Refiners do not get rich, they pay back against given initial expenses to share holders, refineries get repairs made and profits are as volatile as the products. A 42 gallon oil field barrel nets close to 25 gallons of lubricant products, are several gallons of Light Gaseous volatiles as Propane and Butane, use at least two gallons of crude to produce the refined products and ends with residuals as fuel oils and solvents as a 'Free Product' in a 10-15 gallon net, gas and diesel have generally been left overs that had no cost during the pre 1960s decades, costs were in storage and dispersal as to why gas and Diesel were so cheap, end product of gallons of dirty unresolvable oil solids(Bunker asphalt) is a remnant. a average oil field barrel yields MORE end product than went into the towers by these processes. This from my grandfather that ran the towers in the 1930s to 1950s by hand operation until electronic controls occurred. And they still have Flares that burn off those unstable Light Ends volatiles they cannot recover as the process runs. Do the math on Lubricants pricing. 20-25 Gallons per barrel, motor oils from $8-$15/gallon Only 3.5 qts in 4 Grease Gun Cartridges at $3-$5 EACH(over $15/gal), heavy oils can be $8-$20/gallon. A Oil Field Barrel delivered at $100/barrel can deliver from $200-$300 worth of Lubricants, FIRST and Foremost.

It's gone up a dime a day for the last few days now. Up to $2.59. It was under $2 until about Jan 15th. The last 30 cents has been in the last 3 days.

Most have NO Clue. Are gases entrained in Petroleum does little in volume change, Light Ends are gases that have really no use so are flared off. Oils and Greases are the GOLD in Petroleum where Gas Diesel and other solvent fluids are component part of the base stock and once released are the Platinum Bonus after all else is done, take a quart of old oil add a pint of gasoline to it, check how much increase it caused, will not be a full three pints. Bunker asphalt used to be given away just to be rid of, now they sell it as well.

Just got 87 gas at Wally World in Mt. Vernon, Ohio for $2.439. Other stations in town were #2.599 and $2.679. Recently opened the station at Walmart so maybe trying to boost business.

Well I did not see regular 87 at $4 yet but the premium 92 was well above $4 here today. And I stayed in the cheap part of town, and away from the highway. The cheap stuff was 3.45 and diesel was 3.55. Up up and away it goes.

WOW... in PA ? Didnt see that coming this quick.. You expect that in CA or down town NYC... but PA ?
Gasbuddy.com said today that gas prices nationally could hit an average price of $3 a gallon by Memorial Day. But, it looks like that could happen in Pa. much sooner. The cost of a gallon of gas is selling close to $3 a gallon in various parts of the state today. Rutter’s and Sheetz in Mechanicsburg as well as Gulf, Sheetz and Sunoco in Carlisle and Turkey Hill and Sheetz in Palmyra showed prices of $2.89 a gallon this morning. Sadly, the locals are up to $2.75-85 . On a brighter side, it has NOTHING to do with the current WH occupant, it's yet AGAIN the refineries in TEXAS that are to blame !!

Oil refineries in OK never shut down according to Friends THAT WORK THERE. Wood River IL still producing as are the LA and MS Refineries. TX refiners are Cut BACK not shut down as of 02/23, but then again has been a Fuel GLUT for the last few months as people just are not going anywhere.
