It was an option. I have one of each.

I believe that the "disconnect" was an option. It was useful as you state with the use of cultivators. I believe that it was also used with the rotobaler.

I would like to know if all styled WC's had a lever under the steering post that allowed the mechanical lift to be operated without moving the tractor. The rear wheels had to be moving on my Grandpa's 35 WC to lift the mounted cultivator out of the ground after the tractor got too close and stuck in the fence line. Just one of the little problems that a 12 year old incounters on a dailey bases.
Thanks
