What are the differences in the WD45 diesel starter vs the 45 gas starter? I realize the shape outside the housing is different, but what about where it fits thru the housing (torque tube)? Will a gas tractor starter work on a diesel tractor?

They use the same clutch housing (torque tube) buy AGCO's parts book.
The gas starter will work in the diesel torque tube if you put in a gas engine, The gas starter will not work on a diesel engine, the ring gear is diff. The gas starter will work with a gas engine and a diesel starter will work with the diesel engine but the other way.

Even if a gas starter fit in the hole it wouldn't have the power to turn the engine over...at least not for very long....

ML - The ring gear is the same for gas and diesel, whoever at s/n 96714 the no of teeth changed from 100 to 139. this per the AC parts book. - AL

yeah i was just talking about the gas starters torque . if done right it can produce the torque to turn the diesel over .

You can make the 45' gas starter powerful enough to turn its diesel cousin providing the fit, mesh, and design all works. I've built some pretty stout starter motors to turn some of these pulling engines. As with anything else special, it needs to be customized inside the starter like you would the engine for reliable power and torque. A standard gas starter motor however in my opinion wouldn't hold its own for to long cranking a diesel over many times mainly because of its less heavier components inside... |

I guess I should rephrase the question. Will the starter mesh up with the flywheel correctly? It will be used on a WD45 with a G230 engine.

Check out the 2 side by side. I see the countersink hole location puts the nose in different relationship to flywheel, The gas looks puny compared to diesel.

the diesel gear reduction starter is physically bigger. has a different nose all together. I know some modify the expensive diesel starters to put on their pullers . I have been spending verry little money on the gas starter modifications that i make to them and been starting no less than 310 cubic inches and upwards over 400 inches at 14.1 0r higher compression ratios 350 TO 400 PLUS PSI AT CRANKING SPEED on the gas pulling engines i have been pulling. thats why i posted the comment you shouldnt underestimate the torque capabilities of the little gas starter.

Did anybody not go to GOTO this year? Im almost positive he painted up 19 sittin beside the 19 in her work clothes had a gas starter on it.
