Well I am about finished changing my HD6 344 to a 7000 engine. Once I am up and running I will post on the problems I ran in to and the sulutions for anyone who might want to do this conversion. I am concerned about running the old oil bath air filter with this turbo charged system. Does anyone have information on this subject?

First thing I thought of when contemplating the repower was air consumption. Have not seen an HD6AG with 7000 to know what air filtration they used, but dry cleaners on 6000 powered HD6 have nowhere near enough capacity. I bought a much bigger Donaldson assembly to adapt (9"). Donaldsons parts books show air consumption for most American built engines

MacT
The Donaldson list I saw did it by cubic inches displacement

From what I can glean from Donaldson web site the 7000 motor moves 300 cfm. The 6000 moves 218 cfm. The D344 cid motor only moves 143 cfm. Looks like I better build a better air filter than the old oil bath on the HD344

Sounds to me that something is not right in your engine breathing calculations - or I'm up the proverbial creek Presumably (afik) they're all 344 cid? So at 1800 rpm (I'm punting from 516 experience here) it will be breathing 344 x 1800 x .5 ( as 4 stroke) ci/min = 180 cfm So how do the 6000 and 7000 ones get to 218 and 300 cfm? Mind you I'm all for bigger aircleaners - particularly with the dust we get in our part of Oz. A friend used to fit whatever he got with a big Donaldson ahead of whatever was standard with a telltale stud in the intake tract with a dob of grease to show any dust. |

I'm sure you are correct in your concerns, the old oil bath almost certainly won't handle the air flow with the turbo'd 7000 engine ! If you could get the system off an HD-7G that would likely be ideal or a modified newer dry cartridge capable of the required air flow!

My HD6G is running AWSOME with the 7000 engine. I found a big double filter air cleader assy. off a Broce broom for 20 bucks at the local tractor salvage yard. I mounted it between the hydro tank and the loader arm and piped 3.0 in pipimg down through the hood to the turbo. The filter intake is 4.0 so I mounted a Cat precleaner on it. Its a powerfull setup.

I once went with a much larger dry filter on a road tractor and it made a big difference. No doubt more is better. Less makes the exhaust temp. higher, not good. If you have a truck salvage close to you, why not go there and pick up a large canister. From looking at the one in the previous post it looks like there is a convenient spot to mount it. You're on the right track and you'll be happy as a clam when you beat the system. Leon R Cmo

Silencer, you've done a good job there and you have the right to be proud. It sure looks good to me. I just wish I wasn't too old to do these things again. Well maybe not too old(75) this summer, just pretty well broke down. But I can still dream can't I? Leon R Cmo

Air Filter up high out of the dust zone, nice selection for the air cleaner and nice location. Keep up the good work.
Would be great to see a video of it running!!! Thanks - Orangeman
