Good afternoon -
I have a B Model that started sputtering when under the load of the finish mower. There was some dirt in the gas bowl which I cleaned and changed the fuel filter. I cut for about an hour this afternoon and it started sputtering again. Ran fine back to the barn, but each time I tried to engage the mower, it sputtered and nearly cut out. The gas bowl is still clean and the filter looks clean. Any ideas? Thanks, Bill

Crud in the gas tank. Sounds like the engine is running out of fuel under load. Take the sediment bowl assembly out and clean the tank, check the line and double check the main jet in the carb allong with the other straight foreward things.

If you have a mag on your tractor, you may have a bad coil. I had similar problem and and found that the coil was bad on mine.

I have a model B that does this also. Mine was fuel line related. If I was a gambling man, I'm sure yours is also. Going orange is going great!

If it starts to sputter, pull the choke out some and see what it does. This is a pretty simple test to see if it is a fuel problem or spark problem. If choking helps it, start checking for a fuel restriction everywhere from the tank to the carb. If choking it has no effect, start with a complete tune up of the ignition system.

Bill, first off welcome to the Forum. What has been posted is good advice. Also you might want to invest in a fresh set of Autolite 295 plugs if yours have a bit of time on them. BTW you are too close to "Hotlanta" for this old country boy. Jackson County is getting a little crowded for me too. Got two B's - one waiting on brake installation; one parts donor that I may get running for a spare.

Just an old country boy saved by the grace of God.

my c recently started doing something like that. it turned out ot be a loose rocker arm lash adjuster. it only seemed smooth with no load, i soon realized i couldn't get full speed out of the motor at no load. yours probably not that, more than likely fuel, just some food for thought

There are 3 ways to do job GOOD, FAST, CHEAP. YOU MAY CHOOSE 2. If its FAST & CHEAP it won't be GOOD, if it's GOOD & CHEAP it won't be FAST, and if its GOOD & FAST it won't be CHEAP!!!!

As "Tuck" mentioned, the choke trick works almost everytime if its a fuel delivery problem. When you pull the choke a little bit you cut the air to the engine and fatten the fuel mix. If the engine responds, its a fuel delivery or dirt or debris in the load side of the carburetor. Carb needs a roto-rooter....

Look at the screen in the fuel line inlet adapter. I've seen it choke and engine to the point it would only run for a few seconds every 10 minutes.

My "CA" started doing that a while ago. I replaced the governor return spring and it ran fine afterward. Maybe try that.
