What are you guys opinions of the older simplicity mowers? I'm looking to buy one, and just wanted to get you guys's opinions. Thanks!

The 7000 Series and the GTHL Series are probably some of the best and most reliable garden tractors ever built. Lots of attachments and they do the best job of mowing of any garden tractor. The 900 Series Allis garden tractors are the same except for decals.
I've got an old 917 Allis, a 7790 (diesel) Simplicity, and a Simplicity GTHL-17. Implements all interchange. These tractors are also easy to work on.
The one word of caution is that there were some units built with the Kohler Triad V engine. They have a nasty tendency to blow-up.

I have a 17GTH-l large frame tractor/mower. It has the Kohler series II twin cylinder engine. This is a heavy duty unit built to last. As mentioned before, stay away from the Triad engine. They are "junk".

I have a 7117H that I bought from my FIL. Haven't used it yet. It sat for about 4 years and now has a stuck ring in one cylinder and lacks compression. Pretty new engine in it. A Kohler M18. They are a stout machine. When I worked at the Allis dealership I worked on many lawn mowers and those old Allis 700 and 900 series much better built than the equivalent Cub Cadet or Deere. The hydros were good, the standard gear transmissions were good but I'd stay away from any of the variable speed transmissions that they built for a time. They were high maintenance.

I have an AC 716H (equal to the 7016H Simplicity) which I've built specifically for snow plowing, and man, does that thing push some snow! Wouldn't trade or sell it for the world. On top of that, its a pisser to drive! I have the 16HP Kohler bored & worked over w/E.I. and it has plenty of "grunt" in the "push dept".... Just purchased a set of 26x12x12's rear meats for it. I'm in the process of building another 716H for my nephew. Great machines, fun to work on. I have a brochure that mentions the weight of one of those units at 806 lbs by itself. Talk bout' heavy duty! With the Dozer blade up front and the weight box out back, no wonder it pushes the way it does!

I have two 816Gt units with the twin 16HP B&S, both with the 48" deck cut. A real bear and will eat the grass with no problem. Sandy Lake has had anything I have needed on the shelf and ship quick. If you pick up an older unit without grease zerks in the original spindles, check with Sandy Lake as some models can be upgraded with replacement spindles, or you can drill/tap the originals to make them last.
The one time I put mine into a local shop, they had a number of people ask if it was for sale; the shop owner advised they had to move it away from the newer units they sold as people were were openly comparing the heavier quality of "old vs. new".
With prices of the newer "garden tractor" units, I'll keep the old ones going as long as practical but admit a few of the new zero turns have caught my eye.

I have a 917 H with over 1000 hours. It has the Kohler 2 cylinder opposed engine. 48" mower deck, dozer blade, snow thrower, roto tiller, tire chains, home built plow for installing the electronic dog fence.

I had a 7112 with a 48" mower deck -- it was a great mower !! the decks were built "deep" and did a excelent job of mowing..

It's a lawn tractor----not a garden tractor. Built lighter than the large frame models. It was made to complete with the MTD and Sears type lawn tractors.

I have found Simplicity mowers to be the best I have ever used. I used to work for people who took care of a 15 acre cemetery. Let me say that a cemetery is the roughest ground you will find due to backhoes going in and out and graves sinking as the ground settles. We used Simplicity Sovereigns and Allis-Chalmers 900 Series mowers. They did a great job mowing and were the most durable thing that we could find. I went out and bought a 1993 Simplicity Soveriegn with hydro, hydraulic lift and 48 inch deck. I love it. I also do my tilling with a 1967 Allis B-112. Hard to tell how many hours are on it, but it still is going strong and has never been apart yet. My dad has a 1996 Simplicity Landlord with 1,300 hours on it and other than belts, the only thing he has replaced on it was the fuel pump. My dad also has a 1980 Allis-Chalmers 914-Shuttle transmission with 48 inch deck. We lost track of the amount of hours at 3,000 hours but it still mows great. Hope this helps. I have always taken pride in the lawns I mow and my own lawn. A Simplicity or Allis has the finest cut around for the money. We have had great luck and I hope you do too.

I have a Simplicity 3415 shuttle for sale. I might part it out, the wheels tires will fit my AC 917.

Mine being an old farm lawn with lots of pits and dips and sticks and stones will eat in short order any cheap mowers, i know cause it has done it. I now use only older Simplicity or Allis products, main mower is a Sunstar ( built like a tank ) my fun mower is a SunRunner front deck mows almost as good as the Sunstar. Also have B10 with deck and tiller and am mounting the sickle mower, have a b110 with deck, and a B12 waiting for restoration with a sno blower. A good hard working macines

I've got a 70 B212 that my dad bought new a year before I was born. It is a 3 speed variable. I have never had problems with the variable but the bevel gear box has been rebuilt a couple times through the years. That would be something to check the slop in when looking at one to buy. Dad did have a couple extra springs on the clutch belt when he pulled it back in the day. It is my tiller machine now as I use a 716H to mow with and have two 314H's waiting to get the blown up Kohlers fixed.

Its a good machine, large frame, sturdy, the bevel gear box is the thing to check. Far as I know they all had a electric start, they aren't worth a lot of money unless they have attachments.
$450 is about top dollar for the tractor itself if its in AWESOME shape.
