What route would you take??

Got a difficult decision to make, I bought another UC a few weeks ago, It is an early one (1931). Tractor number UC306. It is all here, and needs reassembled, now the problem. This tractor should have the Continental S10 engine. The previous owner had started to restore this, but unfortunetely with the later UM engine. I am torn on going ahead and re assembling her, or waiting till another continental comes up somewhere. I have all the required parts to make a nice Um engine with electric start even, But I know it will be historically incorrect, but hey at least it would be another UC in the collection. In actuallity, this tractor should also be on steel wheels too. I know there is probably  not a right or wrong answer here, but I am interested in how many of you would do it in which manner, Thanks for the input!

A bird in the hand...it would be better to reasemble it with what you have than let it stay in pieces while you wait to find the Continental engine in my opinion. Of course my opinion is worth about what you paid for it.

Yeah its a pickle. I may re assemble it and get it all tuned up and running good, then when a  continental comes along, use the current engine for another U or UC and then worry about a restoration at that point in time

 Hello Orangeiron   I  think I'm in the simular problem,  Yes my continental "U" runs, but there are 3  "UC" highcrops that look like yours.  Been out behind the barn moving old equipment, so that I can dig up the saplings add more dirt and repark the stuff for a party in June

IF you have all the parts, I'd at least put it all together,so some important part doesn't go 'walking away'....or get sold !! If you get her to run, then she's mobile and can always be moved around until you decide to do a 'full and proper ' restoration.
In the meantime, I'd be rebuilding that trailer she's sitting on. Deck boards seem a tad rough, missing left front tire/rim , a fresh cost of paint would be appreciated too !

You should follow your passion if historicly correct is important to then take the time to find the correct engine. We all have differant ideas of what we do with this old equipment. The way i see it none are wrong. So if you put her together the way it is you are still preserving history. Many of these tractors were changed in there early years and that is part of the history of it.  
The universal answer to all questions is yes, how much do you want to spend?

Fred, yes I Do have it along with a couple more strange variations in all three radiators came with it. The first is the Old radiator with allis chalmers on front and down the side.
I also have what would be a later radiator, but It does not have ANYTHING cast into the sides,(no diamond imprint) . The last one is a normal radiator, but I think there must have been a casting error because the the M and E of chalmers are cast together with no space between them. Kind of a neat anomaly. My early radiator is in need of a lot of help, I thought I would get ahold of some of my usual parts people and possibly look for another candidate for my future restoration, Fred do you happen to have a good one?? In reference to the pic of Momma's van, she was actually ok with it. She went to the sale with me that day and talked me into buying this old UC. I had a stroke of luck, too. I bought the UC and a giant box of misc parts, when I got home, there were three complete UM engine gasket sets inside, they had never been open. Also were four brand new sleeves and pistons. Two starters and matching flyweels for electric start on the UM engine, and a really nice RV4 magneto thats ready to install. I also got about two tractors worth of body parts and a nice set of UC fenders. I gave 900 for the lot, so for those of you who have bought gaskets for these before, the gasket sets alone cost what I gave for the whole lot. I felt pretty good coming home.

Do what pleases YOU -- Me, I'd go ahead and work with what you have - could be a long wait for other parts. I'm not a real historical buff, just like to see them running and working.

Yeah the old trailer is gonna get a makeover. I did not haul the Uc on it, partly why the van was full of parts!! My friend hauled the uc to my place on his trailer, then we just rolled it over to my old trailer to empty his easily( it was getting late)  But, I do plan to fix this trailer up, Its home made, but good anbd heavy built.

What are the square things by the brakes covers? (Edit I gess they are attached to the brake covers.)

I would put it together with what you have .Get it painted and enjoy it .Whenanother engine comes along then make the change on it to be historicaly correct .If you wait you may never get to enjoy it plus its easier to store and move around. Just my opinion

Josh, they are mounts for a drive in cultivator. They are cast into the brake covers and are factory on early UC's.
 
 
 
Guys, thanks for the input.
My heart tells me to hold off, but My head says put this thing together. I think I will proceed and re assemble with what I have now, without painting or anything. Then when I come across the correct engine, use this one for another U or UC. I bought another U at the Larry Stephen sale that was in rough shape with a bad engine, I think maybe this engine will eventually end up in that tractor. I would love to have another UC to go with my collection, and a lot of people won't even know its not quite right. Heck, five years ago I would have beed thrilled to have it with the incorrect engine, as I did not even have a U or UC at all then.
Anyhow, I am glad to see you all kinda see the battle in my mind. Thanks to all!!

I don't think there is a wrong way to go , If you go ahead with the UM expect to find a cont. power unit within 5 miles of your place sitting in a shed 1 year later then WALA you have a new project and a extra um engine. Go with what makes you smile. You got a good start, there may be one of the members have one in their shed . AS I see it there is no wrong decisions you can make. Good Luck, Scott

Put it together with what you got.  Continental parts can be dear. I'd be on the lookout for parts for the continental tho. If the desire and parts for the install of the proper engine come about,  you'll have a good engine for the M dozer you might find.
