Just picked up an h3 crawler.
I am wondering how you experts tell if tracks need replacing.
pads look ok but pins have some play in them
and they are definitely not round anymore.
I can rock the pad side to side also
Rollers are not on the pin yet maybe 3/16 off.
Anyone know if this is normal and if not can these be repinned/bushed.
Thanks

First is the rail height measurement, then the check of on center to pin over the length of 3 links (for a average),
this gives the inside wear of pin and bushing (inside of bushing). outside of bush wear is next if round - oval - worn through (top and bottom of it If the link height is within spec, the bushing has one round side, then the bushing can be turned and the pin turned also 180 degrees to bring in a new wear surface. the bushing is longer than the actual area of the link it is pressed into and extends out to the link it is set next to , the extra length sets into cup like area of the next link. A track can get snaky if these places have wear on the inside which is hidden from view. Any bushing that has wear through to pin is junk. As the internal wear causes track to be longer it starts hitting the sprocket teeth higher up on tooth and creating wear on tooth (wearing to sharp point) this puts strain on full track and bearings. |

Looked at the H3/HD3 Service Manual. Pin center to center for a new set of rails is 6.00 inches, max wear is 6.120. Serial number makes a difference on the rail or track side bar as it is referred to in the book as well. Prior to s/n3001, is 3 1/16".

Sorry it took me so long to post Just got back in town.
Measurements for the tracks came in at
2.9in on rails and 24.4 on pins (4links).
Anybody out there know a source for parts or does this seem ok.
Allisman.

they are in the 60% or better so run them , has the top of the bushing got wear or only one side , if one they have more life on or after a turn.

They are not turned.
It is round on topside. I may just turn them.
Hopefully that will help them hit the sprocket better as now they
dont seem to be lining up on center.
Thanks for the help guys.

By on center do you mean the sprocket tooth to the bushing or that the sprocket is hitting at a angle to track. One thing you can also do is swap sprockets from one side to the other to bring a new contact surface into play.
Remember track wear increases with ground speed , but also increases greater when in reverse direction. I would not turn them until the wear gets to close to the limit unless the contact side of the bushing is getting thin. Once turned the wear rate is higher on internal parts it seems .

I was referring to the sprocket teeth to the bushing.
So if I turn the pins won't I have better alignment on the sprocket.
so far what you say makes sense though I would hate to go thru all the trouble
of turning them only to have something break.
I may have to take some pics of this and send them on a later post
before I decide to go to the trouble of turning the pins.
Its funny how these track parts wear differently.
My hd5 crawler has tighter pins and less sprocket wear
but the rollers are touching the pin so that the steel is starting to peel up a bit.
go figure.

Coke,
Thanks for helping us crawler newbies out.
Just got my H3 crawler running and it is remarkable that everything works as good as it does.
Did notice that a couple of the track bushings are worn thru to the pin. Also noticed that it is all worn on one side. Dont think the pins were turned.
Is it worth it to try to repair individual links or should I be looking for a new set of rails.
