Hi,
       Recently my brother and I began working on our Grandpas old model "C" Allis Chalmers.  We figured this would be a good summer project to get it running again after it has been sitting around for 10 years. He did alot of work to it before he passed away and it ran every year that he owned it.  We have a couple of questions just to try to get it running again that we have ran into.
      First question we have is how to you replace the two front tires on a model "C", ours have since dry rotted from not being used.  We dont have a jack high enough to reach the underside of the engine, and since the tires have the profile of a "V" we can get in to jack up the small axle. What would entail of replacing both front tires? (i.e. special tools, etc...)
      Second question we have is how do you determine if the battery is a 12V system or 6V system?  We took the battery out which is similar to a car battery so our guess was its a 12V since it has 525 CCA, however we have nothing else to go by. 
      I'm sure as time goes on we will have more questions and will be using the site to try to find answers.  I've posted below a few pics to show what it looks like.  I believe its a 1941 since we found a 4 digit serial number just in front of an area marked "oil level".
      If you have any information you might think would be handy to help us out I'd appreciate it, we are completly new  to farm tractors.  Thanks.

What you found was a casting number used on all Allis cast metal pieces from that era.  The tractor serial number on a C is located in front of the gear shift on a flat spot on the top side of the transmission casing...it will read tractor no... followed by the serial.  To remove the front tires it should just be a matter of removing the wheel studs from the hub if they are not riveted onto the hub.  If they are riveted to the hub, than you need to spin off the outer wheel cap and remove the hub and wheel with the bearings from the front axle.

   Run one tire up on a block, take the other tire off then you can put your jack under the hub.
   C's were 6 volt from factory but may have been changed at some point in the last 50-60 years. Does it have a mag or distributer ? Generater or alternater ?

How many caps are on top of the battery. A 6 volt should have 3

It has 2 caps on the battery, and it appears to be an old Delco alternator.  If this is indeed a 12V system does it matter what size battery we get (in terms of CCA)?  We would only be using the tractor during summer and to more or less ride around the field.

Looks like a belly mower under it also , if 12V then the same size battery as what is in one of your other vehicles would be the choice . Or a battery with a 4 or 5 year warranty from some place that doesn't ask what your using it in. 
 Your 2 caps probably have 3 holes into cells under each . 
If you have side pictures of it showing distributor (mag) on one side and charging sysem on other side it would answer other questions .

Do you have any cement blocks? wood blocks? or a short fat stump. Use them to build up under the engine to get a bottle jack to work. Loosen the wheel lug before jacking. Remove 1 wheel and then you can jack under the front axle. If it has an alternator on it, it has been comverted to 12 volts. The smallest auto battery should be fine, no lawn tractor battery. measure your old battery and look for the same size. I wouldn't worry too much about CCA. Before you try to start it, be sure to remove the plugs, one at a time so you don't mix up the wires, and squirt oil into each cylinder to prevent damage to the dry cylinder walls. Bob

advice from another first timer:  take lots of pictures as you go.  helps with reassembly and also can give the experts here the info they need to give you excellent advice.
there's an amazing amount of knowledge and experience available to you on this forum from friendly folk who obviously do know what they are talking about.
