Checked to be sure it was the right one ,looked ok....least it HAS 93 GOOD teeth !
Went to toss the packing into the fire, read the label..

Silly me ,I'd have thought I'd be getting 'New Old Stock' as they must have made a whack of them...
Interesting that there's a market to make repo units.Must be a LOT of tractors(maybe cars) that use an 11" clutch and 10th Delco starter ??

On my D-14 I just took the ring gear off and flipped it and rotated it 2 hrs. on the clock face. Works like a new one since the teeth the starter hits now are "new".

Is flipping the flywheel common? I was looking at ordering one, but wondered if they could be flipped.

Don't recommend flipping as the teeth are chamfered somewhat on the starter side and square on the back side. That said, know of several that were fipped and worked.
Also know of several that were removed and rotated 90 degrees, was told that the engine normally stops at the same spot, or 180 degrees from it.
Seeing as how much is involved in splitting the tractor and the cost of a new ring gear, never could convince myself to try salvaging one and then having to redo the work if it did not work out right for me. Edited by GregLawlerMinn - 20 May 2012 at 5:53pm |
