Yep, if you find one that doesn't have motor issues and otherwise decent shape $4000 would be a bargain, the last couple I have seen sold closer to $5000.

There have been a couple on evilbay, one runs, the other one doesn't and they're wanting $7500 for the pair. I'd expect to pay $4000 to $5000 for one that runs ok.

I saw those tractors in person. The running one is so rusty and need either to start in the middle of summer. Way over priced!

I've got to know. Is the 45 diesel so much higher than gas because of being more scarce ?? When we had 2 45 gas and our neighbor had 2 45 Diesel's we plowed together different times on the same style plows and he couldn't keep up. He even measured our plow furrows once to see if we were plowing as deep as him. (we were) He also had a lot of trouble with the one because of head problems even though he did the warm up and cool down as he was told to do. I'm just curious. All tractors were purchased new by the owners.

Well then you should of been in upstate NY a few months ago because one was sold that looked pretty good for $2200.00.
So I would suggest you track it down and buy it for $2500.00 and then sell it for $5000.00. It was in Watertown, NY. |

45 Diesels command such a higher price because so few were made, 6509, and so few originals are left due to the engine problems they had. Due to the cost to properly rebuild that engine, scarcity of complete original tractors left, a good running tractor that has all the correct 45D components would be worth $5000 here in the midwest in an arms length transaction. I agree with the other posts, you would be hard pressed to find a nice running original 45D for $2000 today unless the seller did not know what he had or was intentionally selling it for less the fair market value for whatever reason. If the one you saw had all the 45D components, a D serial number, started easily in warm weather without ether, etc., then $2000 was a steal. If it is missing any of the diesel components, then it is worth less as those parts can be hard to find. If it had anything but the correct buda 230 engine, then it really isn't a 45D at all in so far as a collector is concerned, and would be worth substantially less as the correct engine is nearly impossible to find. When you figure what it costs to rebuild that engine, $6000 to $7000 if done right, perhaps more, plus the cost of the initial purchase of the non running tractor, $2000 and up, then it seems pretty reasonable for a decent running tractor to be worth $4000 to $5000; again assuming it has all the correct 45D components. I have seen many non running 45D's bring more than $2000 and have yet to find a nice running one for less than $4000. The figures I am using reflect recent sales/values. I bought my first 45D, a very nice running tractor, for $1500, but that was 20 years ago. |

i will buy all the 45-d that are running for 2000.00.i have 3 of them.got a little burned on one of them.last one i brought paid 500.00 for it,got it home and o hauled the engine, which was believe it or not was in perfect shape(head and block) put new sleeves, bearings rep all the valves and had the crank ground 10/10.and about 2500.00 in parts.the labor is what eats up,but i did that myself.oh yes i haf the pumpo hauled and the injectors run.as i have stated before,if the top end of that engine was as strong as the bottom, you could not destroy them.that engine was never really understood by a lot of farmers.in the transition from gas to diesel power.we had 4 45,s on the farms back home and you had to somewhat handle it with kid gloves, especially during warm up and cool down or sooner or later things will go to hell in a handbasket, mainly the heads.still nothing sounds better than a 230 engine running under a load....

I have a 45 gas dinoed at 43 horse and the 45 diesel dinoed at 46 horse. We've done a lot of tractor pulls, but never in the same class. So this year I've been pulling the gas in the 5500-6000 weight class with all the weights That I put on the diesel other years. The diesel won the majority of it's pulls, but the best the gas has been able to do is third place. I realize there are a lot of varibles, even with the tractors loaded the same.
