Hey what gear does everyone mow in? Say using a 5 foot rotary cutter on ground that gets cut a couple times a year.
My father in law said to mow in first or I will be tearing stuff up.
I don't have second gear in the tractor, jumps out, been thinking about fixing it IF it's a good mowing gear.
The tractor seems to have plenty of power to mow in third but it's a bit of a rough ride and I worry about tearing something up.

I mow in 2nd or 3rd with a 6ft finish mower. Mowed my neighbors 30 inch tall grass 1st was to fast and I needed to inch throught some of it with the hand clutch. so I depends on how rough and thick it is. I did mow one lenght of the yard in 4th its way to fast for comfort. the grass looked good though.

I mow hay with a 7' sickle mower behind me WD in 3rd gear on the smooth ground without much issue. On the rougher ground I run in 2nd.

I have mowed in 3rd with a sickle mower at about 1/3 throttle. rotary mower is another story. I've got some reeds canary grass in a waterway I've had to slip the hand clutch in low gear to get through(some 6 foot tall). If I mow the mulberry trees off in my CRP ground by the first of June, I have to run in 1st or I leave a lot to pop back up.
I'm thinking 2nd would be kinda handy to have in normal mowing conditions with a rotary mower.

I mow in 1st gear with WD45 and 6 foot rotary mower.Plenty fast and usually have to use hand clutch to slow down in the tall stuff.

Depends on what you are cutting. thick waterways and the heavy pasture would be second gear rapped up pretty good, then down shift into first upon moving into something a little tougher, and, if its really tough, I raise the mower 2 or 3 inches. But, if in the barnyard or on a roadway, something cut on a regular basis, third gear is fine.

I use a worn out WD that burns almost as much oil as it does gas to mow my pasture once a year. I think it has a 45 crank, but i'm not 100% sure.
I use a 5 foot (couldn't find a six foot model for the money I wanted to spend) BMB brush hog in second or third, depending on how thick the ragweed is. The tractor was plenty of power, find out what size bolt to use for a shear pin and be safe.
I would fix the transmission, second gear is waht I use the most. Yours was probably worn out by pulling a plow for untold hours on end.

2nd gear 1/2 throttle when cutting the hay field, bottom of the field had johnson grass that grows up to 6-7ft by the time i start to bail, tractor mows it right down, keep the blades in good shape that will help, also i found if i cut in first, it was bogging down in the thicker stuff,i was going to slow, it was mulching up the hay, so i went to 2nd gear, perfect, didn't miss any spots and left a nice windrow for bailing

well I mowed some in 3rd gear. The tractor has plenty of power for it. It's a bit of a rough ride though. Also it bent up the homemade three point on the tractor some. Tweaked one of the lower arms.

Seems we all want to do stuff faster - me included - but if you are having a rough ride and actually harm your equipment, I would give serious thought to slowing it down a bit. I have done things in a rush, and it always seems to come back and bite me in the end one way or another.

I always mowed in 2nd gear with my WD's and 5' brush hog, simply to be easier on the equipment. Don't recall ever having to use the hand clutch. Still use 2nd on the 17, though go from low to high n the big stick with it. It's just too easy to use that stick, but I guess that's the point of having it.

Use a 45 with a 7 foot pull type rotary cutter. Tractor has enough power to run in 3rd, but a lot of the grass & weeds just gets knocked down and stands back up the next day. I generally use 2nd gear, get a good clean cut, and don't worry about all the rough spots. FWIW

if your bouncing around on the seat, your equip is bouncing around to. it's better to take a little longer cutting then be replacing the front spindle in the middle of the field.
