Any advice on pairing the 301 to an Automatic transmission. I have searched around and do not think flexplates exist for the 301. Im pairing the 301 to a Allison 1000 out of a 2007.5 duramax. I have read that some race builds will weld the drive plate to the torque converter. Then bolt the drive plate to the flywheel. Any input would be much appreciated.

Unless im missing something I believe recesses could be machined into the flywheel for converter bolt heads. Then bolt the plate to the flywheel

That is an idea. I was just thinking on utilizing the duramax flexplate and maybe have a adapter peice from crank to flexplate? I wanted to retain the allis chalmers starter at first. But after thinking more on it, honestly whatever I can make work and is solid. The Allis 1000 transmission has a different starter location. Passenger side down low.. the original allis is Passenger side up high. What would you think about making that adapter peice to fit inbetween the lmm flexplate and crank? Since I have to move the starter anyways.. and the duramax starter would be much eaier to work with. Much smaller.

Maybe Dr Allis will chime in. Its my thought that diesels have that heavy flywheel for a reason. It seems to me that a mechanical governor might get a little dancy without that weight to keep rpm steady but im really speculating out loud

I appreciate the conversation. I hope more to come. Yes the gentleman who posted the need for the flywheel seems to correct from what Im reading. The duramax comes with a flywheel and a flexplate bolted to it. Then the torque converter bolts to the flex plate. I need to see if a flexplate can be modified to the allis flywheel.

I found the Fiat-Allis 545B wheel loader has a flywheel housing. Not sure if it is a SAE#3. If it is I could outfit my Allison 1000 with a SAE#3 bell housing. Also the loader has a flexplate. I will read more on it tomorrow.
