    Posted: 21 Jul 2026 at 8:04pm
I just bought an Allis Chalmers tagged 4 cylinder diesel engine out of an 8000# lift, it says Mattoon Illinois, which I thought all engines came out of Harvey Illinois.
It has a Rosa master injection system with John Deere style pencil injectors, a cross flow head. The tag doesn't appear to be an Allis Chalmers style tag, which makes me think they bought it from a supplier, the engine is a "436" which I have never heard of, found a similar engine tagged Allis Chalmers that's turbo charged. Does anyone know anything about these? The lift was scrapped, but it's a late 70's early 80's lift by the picture, but all the information I have found says the 8000#+ lifts used the 262?
TIA

how about this ????

Google---The 1978 4-cylinder engine in your forklift is almost certainly a Perkins 4.236 diesel. Widely used in industrial and agricultural machinery from the 1960s to the 1980s, it is a naturally aspirated 3.86-liter engine producing between 60 to 85 horsepower depending on its specific industrial calibration
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

I found that same thing, and that was my first choice that it was a perkins, the odd thing about it is, a Perkins would have a CAV fuel system , this has a rosa master ( stanadyne) fuel system with John Deere injectors like a 4020 had, square fuel filters like the 7000 series allis , which most perkins used the CAV filter.  According to google Perkins did use the stanadyne fuel system, so I am wondering if Allis Chalmers required an "americanized" fuel system for the forklifts, because the Perkins used in the 160/6040 was CAV, and the engine they used in the backhoes and forklift also had a CAV fuel system.  Also the Perkins has the exhaust manifold and intake on the right side of the engine, this engine has a cross flow head

Was it originally turbocharged?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgf6mf3FuS8

JobbersInc has a reman engine with pics listed on their website, and Grindstaff engines has a listing for engine parts, for D436 engines…
The engine pictured on JobbersInc webpage looks to be similar to your description.

this wasnt turbocharged, but Jobbers inc has a new crate engine that is turbocharged that is the same as this engine, so whoever made it made it in both configurations, it also has a bunch of casting ports not machines out so you could use it in different applications, such as the dipstick and oil fill tube could be in different places.

I scanned through Swinford’s A-C Construction Equipment book last night but did not see anything about this particular engine. Will be interesting if you figure out the details…

That is the overhaul kit on youtube, I seen that last night, but I don't think that was an Allis Chalmers built engine. 436 I think would have been the metric engine number meaning 4 cylinder 3.6 liter, which doesn't make sense why Allis Chalmers would have made the 433  ( 4 cylinder 3.3 liter) that was used in the farm equipment, the rough terrain forklifts, the combines, small dozer etc, and only be slightly bigger and completely different castings for a forklift

" The bible" is where I turned also, and found exactly what you did! LOL
I also looked up Nissan, MAN, Continental, Waukesha, Hercules, Yanmar, Kubota, John Deere, International, Cat, and nothing matches it

That’s cool! I’m still wondering what machine (Allis-Chalmers) had this engine, since we haven’t found it documented in A-C literature.

According to the engine building place they used it in the forklifts because the 262 was discontinued, which is another mystery because Allis Chalmers kept building the 262 for military applications right till the end

Glad that you managed to identify the engine.  I’m interested in the Perkins discussion, because I remember reading that British-built Model B tractors were fitted with Perkins P3 diesels as an alternative to the petrol-paraffin engine that was fitted to the “B” that my Dad had.  I guess that the A-C/ Perkins relationship may have ended in the 1960’s when Perkins were taken over by Massey Ferguson?

I’m in Scotland, a few hundred miles north of Peterborough where Perkins are based, but I did take a trip last year to see the derelict CAV injector factory at Sudbury in Suffolk which was about to be demolished.  Vast place with several acres of machine halls, which had passed through the hands of Lucas then Varity and finally Delphi before closing.  Took a load of photos for the sake of posterity.

I had some relatives not far from Mattoon. I can't find anything on Waukesha, Allis, or Buda building engines there or having any sort of presence... I wonder if a 3rd company was assembling them? Very curious.

Allis Chalmers was still buying Perkins into the late 70's for sure. The 6040 had a Perkins engine, the 715B Back Hoe, and some of the smaller built consumer construction products used the Perkins

The forklift was built in Mattoon, by Allis Chalmers, and I assume the engine tag saying "Allis Chalmers Mattoon IL" referred more to the plant than the actual origin of the engine

Ah, I misunderstood. I thought you were saying the engine tag had Mattoon on it. That still puzzled me as it's very odd I hadn't heard of an AC factory in Mattoon before.

I did a little more digging now realizing it was an AC forklift factory location. Are you sure you didn't misread it and it actually says Matteson, Illinois?

This is a good example where an actual picture of the tag posted here, and the engine, would be worth a lot of internet words.
