Seems every cylinder company has their own way to determine what holds the end cap or rod seal gland to the body . Each has a simple design that defies logic . External threads on barrel , gland held in by snap ring you can see , gland held in by hidden snap ring - or some other mysterious method . Tyrod cylinders , threaded ends , snap rings . Should be some form after inspecting the end to figure out the secret

Some cylinders require removing the pipe fitting to expose the innards to allow removal of the hidden snap ring. I dunno about yours

It seems as if there is a compotation between engineers to add something no one else has done yet. Wither it is really an improvement or not.

I have removed the two internal nuts that go against the packing. As far as I can see the piston should now slide out. But it doesn't.

If that piston has spanner holes and has threads toward the outer side you will have to loosen that to get it out

Just a guess. My D17 series 4 was like that untill i changed it to later style cylinders

I looked again at the service manual and the inside of the cylinder. There is nothing holding the piston except seals. I am going to chain it to something and pull on it with a hoist and see what happens.

I got it apart. Tied one end to my grader and the other end to my kubota. Jerked it apart. Now to find seals for it.
