 Topic: CA loose steering

Hello everyone, my CA is back under its own power again and everything seems to be in good shape so far except for the loose steering, it keeps one on their toes in 4th gear! I did a search on here about the problem but didn't find anything. Did the same on Yesterday's Tractors and I did find a post there from back in May 2018, mentioning a pawl that engages the worm gear that gets worn, and that it was perhaps available from Deere. Is this pawl available from them or Agco? Would anyone have part numbers, or does one have to be made? Are there any adjustments I could try in the steering boxes? Thanks for any help and advice,  . |

when your driving down the road , you can move the steering wheel 20 or 30 degrees in each direction and there is no movement of the steering arm on the gear box below the gas tank ??? If so, that is the PAWL problem you speak of... If the arm moves and the SLOP is in the front end under the radiator, thats different..

When going down the road at high throttle, it wanders considerably. The most play is in the front gear box under the gas tank, there is some play in the front one as well, but not as much.

I was able to take most of the slack out of our CA steering by adjusting the "Ross" steering box.. Her is a pic of where to adjust the box. Just loosen the outer nut and adjust the inner with a screwdriver. Still a small amount of slack after a slight adjustment, but not much. Dan

Caution when adjusting the steering box if adjusted while the steering is centered you may get it tight enough to break the cover when the wheels are turned.to avoid this turn the steering all the way to the left or right then adjust it.

DCAC, I believe I did have the Ross steering box apart and cleaned and repacked and adjusted as Dan mentioned. I did change Ross boxes also. I must have found what I thought was the better of the two? Might be some pictures stuck in my CA thread? I also put new bearing in the lower pedastal I believe? Been a year or two. have CRS! Some pictures that may be helpful?? Or not?
That is about all I could round up related to CA steering.
Ours steers pretty good. It had steering arm issues and the long bar issues too. All good now. It's only nuts and bolts! Regards, Chris and Cheryl

these are the two "tapered pins" that will be worn.. You take the nut off the cross shaft and pull off the steering arm.... Take the cover off the back side of the gear box and push the CROSS SHAFT out of the hole.. look at the inner side of these two pins.. New pins can be made on a simple lathe... someone probably sells them, but i have not looked..
