Lawn fertilizer??

Anybody know of a cheap(yes, I’m a cheapskate) fertilizer for ‘old established lawns’? Last year, it treated the main area with Ortho Weed-B-Gone, it knocked the weeds back for sure, but unfortunately it exposed the fact this area has very little ‘grass’ hence it was very sparse most of the summer. Fast forward to this spring, and the broadleaf, and ground ivy have come roaring back with a vengeance. I don’t really want to spray again, don’t really want to apply dry ‘weed-n-feed’, never had satisfactory results in this dry climate. Before everyone asks, no I have not taken soil samples, the soil here is a dark loamy type, when wet it’s sticks together, when dry it’s almost like small pellets, and anything that was packed when wet will completely fall apart when dry. Zone 8a. Approximately 50 miles south southeast of Abilene Tx.

IL Here.  I get plane ole 20-20-20 or 10-10-10- if I can catch either on sale.  The most cost effective source of nitrogen locally is urea in the 50 lb bags at the local fertilizer company.  I mix the urea with the balanced fertilizer to spike up the nitrogen.

Cheapest lawn fertilizer? ~Decaying grass clippings…
For good weeding, mow lawn at highest mower deck setting. A healthy grass lawn mulched on tall setting will self fertilize & shade out many broadleaf weeds. Plus, taller grass seems to go longer thru drought? Use 24D on stubborn broadleaf weeds.
