My tiller engine had a carb that elbow broke on. Couldn't get the elbow. Bought new carb and installed it. Surges like hell. Cant figure out how to stop it. Needs almost full choke to run. As usual, made cheap with no easy adjustment. What is likely cause? Thanks, Tracy

governor spring is 'wrong'? either too 'light' or 'long'. 'slop' in the system allows engine to run fast them slow, fast then slow, never finding the 'happy' point. other possibility, governor rod is in wrong hole in the throttle plate. I now take a picture or make a drawing BEFORE I tear stuff apart. You 'might' be able to see wear marks in the proper hole, maybe.

Jay, it only had one arm attached to it. I put it back same as old one. I will see if linkage is too tight. The other carb did fine but pissed out fuel in broken elbow. Thanks, Tracy

hmm, EVERY gas engine I've ever worked on has had a light tension spring with the carb-guv rod sitting inside of it. maybe post make/model of engine ?

grab the throttle lever BY HAND and hold it... and OPEN to get more RPM.. see if the governor is FIGHTING YOU to cut back... or if carb main jet is too small and feeding TOO LITTLE FUEL....
might be able to take the governor spring OFF and run the engine BY HAND ( do not over RPM) and see how the new carb acts ?? if its not the THROTTLE, but the CHOKE must be mostly shut to get the engine to run, then the CHOKE is cutting down on the AIR FLOW... meaning there may not be enough GAS flow.. or main jet is TOO SMALL.

Steve, I have that spring and rod on mine. I did as you said, it does run with the choke on but still surges. If I can find a new elbow, I will put old carb back on. It ran fine, just dangerous the amount of gas it pissed out at elbow. Thanks, Tracy
