Many of you likely know this already but drilling through stainless can be a chore. Years ago the guy at the welding shop told me to use castor oil. I tried it and was pleasantly surprised. Tonight I had to drill some 5/16 holes in a plate of 3/16 SS. Put a drop of castor at each spot and again surprised how well it works. For someone who doesn't know this, this could be a great tip.

"SOME" bed rails are HARD... dont know why , but they got little chips of SOMETHING in them.. like carbide !! ..
Had an old machinst at work and i needed a 1/4 inch hole in something that was IMPOSSIBLE to drill... He worked over a carbide concrete drill bit... and put a cutting edge on it like a steel drill bit... SLOW and LOTS OF OIL and it did the job... I was impressed !!

Hey Steve,,I have one of those hand held Concrete Hammer drills that one of the carpenters gave me years ago. The tip is four point like a Philips screw driver and remember that he told me not to sharpen it as it would ruin the metal,,,??? You would hold the shaft and strike the drill and rotate the drill 1/4" every time you hit the drill. Its amazing how quickly you could drill a 1" hole in any concrete.

srainless is realley very soft but heats and or workhardens very quickly , then it is hard to work with must saw and drill slow and keep cool and lubed and its not bad to work with and by al means dont center punch and harden were you have to start drilling just start your holes with a center drill

In the early days of aviation, castor oil was used as engine lube because it didn't thicken up excessively in the cold temps at high altitude. Many of those engines were rotary types that used a total loss oil system; the oil fumes blew out all around the airplane and the pilots had to breathe the fumes, often resulting in them feeling compelled to relieve themselves immediately upon landing. Oh, the good ol' days!

When I was young about 65, 70 years ago, when I would watch the midget races you could smell the cars that used castor oil.

Joe, it was used to âlubricateâ your âplumbingâ when you were a little bit âplugged upâ and you had best not get too far from the pot. What section in Wally World did you find it?

A real good video on quality and drill performance over several brands and within brands themselves - Seems just about every bit is now made in China - except 1 IS , and one German drill company . From 0 holes in mild steel for one brand to over 480 holes - using same bit with another |

The whole caster oil thing reminds me of a bit of useless knowledge tucked away in a corner of my brain... If you really want to roll coal and all's you have is a gasser, drill a hole into the ex manifold, and rig a bulb to squeeze a load of castor oil into that hot manifold, and hit the gas, clouds of black smoke will emanate from your tail pipe. I wouldn't try this on a car with a cat converter...

Well Chit, Hubert,,,I had no idea,,,!!! ![]() ![]() Actually as I walked into Walmart,, I whipped out my trusty IPhone and called up the Walmart App to see where the castor oil might be and long about then,,I knew I was not gonna buy any of that high priced "stopper plugger upper" especially at the $28 price.,,!! the app said it is at the Pharmacy area,,,, I keep a bottle of Tap Magic at my lathe and one at the big drill press. The Tap Magic is made especially for machining and drilling and costs less than half of that dang castor oil,,,,,

We use caster oil for belt dressing on our J.I. Case 140W square hay baler. Just a very very small amount on the flat belt will improve the grip and hold to the center of the pulleys.

Remember back in youth when I had a 35 Ford 5 window coup stock car , every so often at a race you could smell burnt castor oil in the air as some would add it to their fuel - said gave better performance - but supplemented Aviation fuel of high octane which had no lube in it .
Remember the smell well as those dirt tracks back then were bowl shaped depressions , with fans setting on hill around them . |

I think some would add nitro in the mix also. When I made model airplane fuel I would mix methanol, castor oil and nitro methane.
