OK, was 'gifted' a Kohler magnum 8HP from a real Troybilt Horse rototiller. NO oil drips, crud, mud, a 'barn find'...

Very clean engine, sat for years(dusty, chranshaft rusty, but NO oil leakage, oil in sump, good spark, nice compression(tough to pull over, well, for me...)Wont start and run, tear it down a bit....

the CAMSHAFT is broken near the exhaust cam lobe.

HOW the heck does a CAMSHAFT break ????

i have seen several twelve horse kohlers with broken camshafts over the years or 14s with bad balance gear shafts bust cams mostly the one with balance gears thats why they dont last very long after they have been overhauled if all of the balance gear stuff didnt get replaced  just my opinion

Seen that about as much as I have the Command series popping valve seats and destroying the head. Kohler's attempt to lighten up the "K" series in some of the wrong places.

The Kohler K'series single's Automatic Compression Release consists of a centrifugal weight and ametal tab alongside the exhaust lobe. When turning fast, the tab is rotated alongside the lobe, and vexhibits no effect. when turning slowly, the tab is alongside three lobe such that it holds the exhaust valve open longer, which prevents the cylinder from generating induction flow for about 15 crankshaft degrees... effectively reducing compression.

When the engine has been run for a long time, oil soot accumulates on the valve stems, making them sticky, particularly the exhaust stem, as it is absorbing significant amounts of exhaust heat.

as the soot turns to plaque on the stem, it binds in the valve guide, causing the engine to lose power, frequently stumble... and often stop. when this happens, the ACR extends, the engine comes up on compression stroke, a fuel charge is drawn in, but the more hot valve causes ignition to occur WELL PRIOR TO tdc, and it throws the crank backwards.

This backhands the ACR tab, jamming it against the stuck valve, breaking the camshaft.

the solution, is to put a coupe ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas tank every couple fillups, it helps cut loose the stem goo and send it out the muffler in a minty fireworks display.

BTW... SOOTY stems is a common occurrence on flathead (or if you're in the UK... "Side Valve) engines, which is why the old timers would regularly pull the head, scrub out the combustion chambers, pull and clean the valves, and run a valve guide cleaning tool through, then reassemble, lap-in the valves and seats, reset valve tappet clearances, and reinstall the head.

My Dad bought a brand-new rototiller back in about 1974, it had a 5 hp Tecumseh; broke two camshafts within a year so it certainly wasn't from poor maintenace. I avoided that brand ever since.

Have 2 - K341 16HP engines that over the years I have rebuilt as well as a Tecumseh 16 HP unit I ran for some years in my New Holland S16 tractors
Now powered with 18 HP Honda V engine
Koehler's seem to have balance gear problems in older engines , last one the gear broke and took dipper off end of rod .
Bought a Ariens 16 HP tractor with snow blower , mower and leaking oil pan for $300 , seems someone solved last oil leak using silicone on pan instead of gasket after working on it . 1 qt a hour leak and well oiled undercarriage .

I have a 22 HP BRIGGS V twin with pressure lube / filter / OHV ...(Mower) . Bought in 2004. Run about 100 Hours per year , so it is pushing 2000 Hours now...Never had an internal problem. Had to change the CHARGE module a couple years ago.. I change the oil and filter in Feb every year to get ready for the summer season.

Did have problems with HARD CRANK a couple times... had to reset the valve lash to fix that..
Like them all, but love the "B"s.
