So I was looking for alternatives to sandblasting my tractors. My brother Charlie suggested his de-scaler and man I like it! Would never use it on the engine but every where else it did a great job. I’m sure many of you out there use them but I am really impressed with it. Takes a big air compressor, which I thankfully have, is very loud, so I use ear muffs. But it makes short time of removing scaling and stuck paint. A few pics to follow. Just need to hit it with a scuff pad and it’s ready to go.

Charlie said he got it from Harbor Freight, it’s a comb de-scaler/air chisel. Barrel changes out for each attachment.

The first picture is de-scaler only, second picture is after de-scaler and quick abrasive pad.

The wheels took 5 minutes in the 1st picture , 7 min on the 2nd one, Far from done, but I just wanted you to see how quickly it works. I think I found my alternative

I see it now. View from phone so pictures are small. I have the inline version and it worked well for about 20 minutes. After all that how do you plan to prep for paint? My understanding of refinishing is if old paint sticks after what you've done so far, its solid enough to paint over?

AC720man, Great job! Yes, it's great for "hard to reach places." Can't wait to see how your tractor paints. Thanks for sharing photos. I've been using descaler to clean up older gravity wagon boxes for repairs/painting. On the thinner gauge sheet metals (14-16gauge), it will quickly expose trouble areas where rust has totally compromised metal(top/bottom). In areas where previous owner allowed grain/debris to collect in the floor valleys or base of door, it's needles will gently vibrate rust away, leaving pinholes/stress cracks that require patching.

The second picture where I hit it with a sanding pad is close to being ready to primer. The old paint that is in the pores is fine too leave as it is stuck well and will help give a smoother finish. The scaler needles are too big to get in the tiny pores. I’m ok with that. The work that I have done to this point including the frame rails took around 2 hours. Frame rails will need a sanding pad and they will be done. Again, this is not going to be a show tractor, just making her look nice while she works on our farm. I have made a lot of repairs to make it a much better D17 than she was before.

The wheels will be removed to finish those once I get it in the paint shop and get it on jack stands.

Steve the wheels and tires were on it when I bought it. Tires are 90% and the rims are in great shape. I did paint the rims last fall. Front rims have a lot of pitting so I’m unsure what I will do on those. I may repair them or just order new ones depending on price. She will get 2 new tires up front.
Was able to spend some time this evening running the drill and scuff pad. Scuffing the engine, mainly the valve cover the best I can will be next. Won’t be long before she is ready for etching primer. |

Your work does look good Robbie. I've been doing that for along time now. Makes sand blasting parts way faster too. You should be wearing a respirator. Dusty work, and there might be lead in the paint. Tim

For sure Tim, respirator, safety glasses, and ear muffs are required. It will take about 2 seconds of use with a de-scaler and you will chuck the ear plugs and reach for full ear muffs. Lol, it’s loud
Glad you and Ray made it the the show, a little too far for me to come. |

I've often wondered this. In spots that aren't sandblasted and there is a little surface rust. WIll the rust come back throguh the paint. When I pained one 12 years ago I sandblased everything to make sure there was no rust to come back.
I'm not a pro so what do the pro's say?

Pardon my ignorance here, but what exactly is a descaler? I see these needle guns, but I have never used one. Is that how you got the paint and scale off? Can you give a few more details of how they work and how you get into all the cracks and crevices. The results look great, and it sounds easier than paint remover or sandblasting. I've just never used one or see one used before.
