 Topic: D-15 governor???

Hello Our D-15 II governor is erratic. It’s ether idle or full bore. Does the the governor need to be rebuilt. Which parts should we make sure we have when we open her up. Thanks

If you are describing it correctly, it sounds like a broken governor weight. This situation usually has the engine over speeding with about an inch movement on the throttle lever from the slow idle position. If it was fine until now, something has changed and that usually means governor weights. This is something that happens all of a sudden.

Could be a bad governor. However check the the cross arm adjustment is correct first. It may be just be as simple as correctly adjusting the governor cross arm.

Check the link rod from the carburetor to the cross shaft. There should be a spring that goes on the link rod then connects to a manifold bolt towards the from of the engine. I recently bought a D12 from an auction that did something similar to what you described. It seemed to go from idle to high speed with very little travel on the throttle lever and then the governor really didn't respond when under load. The spring on mine was connected to a manifold bolt to the rear of the engine, so it was working against the governor. The service manual doesn't show where the spring is connected, I looked on a friends D12 to see where it was connected. It works correctly now.

D-15 does not have that spring on it.

You haven't done a very good job of describing what goes on for sure. Let me put it to you this way. If you have a broken governor weight and you pull the handle throttle half-way down or more, the engine will probably fly apart. Use your tachometer for information !!
