 Topic: D17 Series I or III?

My brother and I are restoring an old family farm tractor. We are unsure what D17 Series we have. It has Series III decals, but the serial number is D 17 17087, which indicates that it is a Series I. Could it be possible that the torque housing was changed out and replaced with a used Series I housing, or maybe the rest of the tractor was "upgraded" from a Series I? Can somebody tell me what Series this is based on these photos?

The serial number is correct, it is definitely a series I. Other things that confirm that are: #1 it has the early style manifold that takes the same muffler as a WD-45, not the oval shaped muffler a series III would have. #2 it has the power steering pump located ahead of the distributor, not a separate unit mounted above water pump and driven by a belt like a series III would have. #3 It has an oil bath air cleaner mounted in front of the fuel tank where as a series III would have a dry element filter mounted above valve cover. #4 the hand clutch lever has no thumb guard around the button where as a series III would have one. #5 the power adjust rear wheels have the eccentrics to tighten the centers to the rails where as the series III has the wedge style tighteners. #6 your tractor has the mounting holes for the headlights in the radiator shroud as a series I does where as a series III would have them mounted on the fenders. Someone definitely just put the wrong decals on it at some point in it's life. Hope this helps. Good luck on your restoration as family tractors are priceless in my humble opinion. Take care. Don Jr.

Great looking tractor for your restoration project. As noted by others above, it sure looks like a Series I. The D17 was one of the best models by Allis Chalmers
I grew up on the metal pan seat of a Series I my father purchased new in 1957 and my brothers still use on the family dairy farm. I own a Series III and a IV and all three are a pleasure to operate

_____________________________________________________________________ Well, as the others have said, the "tractor" serial number indicates it's a 1959 Series I. It is hard to tell from the picture, but Series II, III and IV tractors were painted Persian Orange 2 rather than Persian Orange 1. My guess is that either, as you suggest, the housing has been changed or the engine has been upgraded to a mid Series II or later unit at some time. Your engine has the high pressure engine oil pressure system as indicated by the location of the oil lines and the new style spin-on "full flow" oil filter. This upgrade was made late in 1959 with Series I Serial #24001 called the "black bar" models because of the black bars across the grille. If your tractor has them, they are covered and out of sight. It would be interesting to know what your tractor's "engine" serial number is. BTW, the improved high pressure oil system is a definite plus!

It has had the engine replaced at some point. Full flow oil didn't come out till 24,001 AaronSEIA
