folks, I was able to help the local Tractor club harvest corn at the club grounds: I took the wide front WD:
Two pickers made it to the field. The New Idea and a Massey 2 row.
Friend Matt tried the WD for a few rounds:
The John Deere R was also used to pick the majority of the 2 acres. The Massey picked 2 rows out of the center and was retired to the barn for the year. It had some drive line issues.
The corn did not husk good with either machine. Maybe not dry enough. But we got it done before this rain and wind storm. We had three partial loads. About 10 bushels was hand husked and put in the small crib. The rest will go for cow feed to a member of the club.

Chris,Looked like a fun day and a nice break from the shop project.Like what was said in another post, with all that's going on in this crazy world these days , it's good to get outside and be able to do this stuff and forget about all the craziness for a little while.Nice pics, thanks for sharing.

Folks, Glad you like the pictures, its some of what I do. Just like falling off a bike. I snapped back in time 50 years driving the Allis and the New Idea single row! This ground was solid since it has been pretty dry this late summer early fall. The corn stalk on this old brand is very tall, with some ears 6-7 foot off the ground. They did not snap off good! Yes the R works well. I even drove it about 10 feet! Very strange!  It was a good break from my building project. Spent the entire day, getting ready, moving machinery, picking, repairing, husking, hauling, visiting, eating pizza, standing around, more visiting, helping with unplugging the picker, switching tractors, putting wagons under cover, enjoying the day with like minded folks! Good to see some of the younger guys getting interested too. Matt and his friend Dillon did a lot of the running!
Another picture of the R. This belongs to the President of the club. Runs very nice and sounds so different!
My WD moving the drill so we could get the pickers out. The 60 x 120 building is jammed packed full of antique machinery. Including a Rumely Oil Pull.

Chris, Looks like a good day with antique machinery. It is all interesting to watch. Did you ever use any of that Bloody Butcher corn for corn meal; makes good corn bread. That Massey corn picker reminds me of a neighbor that used to open up our corn fields back in the 1950's with Minneapolis 2 row self propelled picker. Dad had a No. 7 New Idea. Has anyone ever attended the Rough and Tumble Engineers show in Kinzers, Pa? Went there in the fall probably 8-10 years ago. Lots of machinery including a good amount of steam stuff. Had an operating steam shovel and a locomotive too.

ac hunter, Yes the club made corn muffins with the meal. They were very good with the homemade bean soup! This old 2 row picker is very worn and is a tribute to our president and his work to keep this functional. I have not been to the Rough and Tumble show but hear good things about that show too!

I have to agree with Tbone the R looks nice. I grew up with 2 cylinders, still some of that ib my blood. Thanks for all the good pictures.

Chris, you certainly had a fun day playing with old tractors, old pickers and old guys! And some younger ones, too.  That is the kind of adventure that I enjoy. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Folk, Glad you enjoyed the pictures. With no tractor events this year its been pretty quiet! The barley that was planted next to the corn looks good too! You cans see it pretty good behind Dillon, Dave, Steve and Matt. That will be a project for a hot summer day next year:
