I have a WD that was running well until about a week ago. it at first appeared to be an electrical problem, so I have since replaced the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, points condenser, coil. it fired up and ran for a couple minutes but if I put it in any gear but 1st it died. so I thought fuel problem, I then start from the glass fuel bowl and worked to the carburetor, seem to have a good flow of fuel, tried adjusting the main fuel jet, and the ideal screw. Now it will fire run for a few seconds(<5) but wont continue running. Now my understanding is the firing order is 1243, and the cylinders are numbered 1-4 starting with the cylinder closest to the radiator. what am I missing.

Got the hose from the air cleaner to the carb on it?  Pull that off and see what happens.

clean out the tank.... could be a semi floating gremlin in there..
or...

a thin sliver of gas can yellow nozzle could be in the inlet tube of the sediment bowl

THAT only took me 3 daze to figure out......grrrrrrrrrr...

Disconnect fuel line at the carb and see if you get a strong fuel flow for several minutes. Get a helper to rock the tractor so the gas sloshes in the tank, then let it sit for a few minutes and see if this affects the flow.

Sounds like the fuel tank isn't venting.  If you remove the fuel filler cap, start it up, and attempt, will it drive around fine THEN?

Jryan,
Had water in gas on our D17. Similar problem. Did tractor set out for a long time in the sun?

Take the plug out of the bottom of the carb and see if you have gas, with the gas turned on.

Another thing that could cause it is an inline fuel filter.  You should have a metal fuel line from the sediment bowl to the carb.

So I opened the main drain on the carb and let all the gas(about 4gals) run out of the tank, had a pretty steady flow the entire time I watched it(walked away a couple times to do other things). thjs gave me the added bonus of two things, I went ahead and took the glass sediment bowl of and of course int the top inlet there was a couple leaves or really thin pieces of metal. so while it was off I also flushed the tank to see if I could get anything else inside the tank out and then I am letting it dry out and will put fresh gas in tomorrow and see what happens. someone did ask if if set out for a while, not really long it sat for two days. when I get it running and out in the sun I will snap a few pics.

Sounds like a plan. Looking forward to the pictures.
Doesnt sound like it set out long enough to have a lot of condensation in the tank. Your doing good checking out the fuel system. Make sure you have sparky to the plugs. It should run!
Regards,
Chris

We had a problem similar with a B   Ran fine then stopped.  Turned out to be a rag in the gas tank. - the customer lost the gas cap and put a rag in it to keep the dust out.  Rag fell into the tank and the customer forgot about it.
Took a few trips to figure that out.
Sounds like you had a similar problem.  You know, these units are so old (70 plus years) that the most unusual things happen  Congratulations on having the patience to figure out what was wrong.  I am always amazed at the pains you all take to keep these machines running.  Thanks
Good Luck!

Sounds like you are going in the right direction, checking the gas.  Like John(MI) says, take the air cleaner hose off and see what happens.  I've seen them completely plugged (the air cleaner itself) so it would run a bit and then die.  So make sure it's got air and fresh fuel and get back to us on it.

Sorry this took so long. I had to take my tractor to a mechanic to have it fixed, turns out it was jjst out of timing. whether this happened as I replaced parts(I was pretty careful to put the plug wires back on where i took them off) ir trhe mechanic said that the distributor could have been put on different then it would have not had the same timing. The only proble. is now that I can only kkeep it running if I keep the choke open. The mechanic says he things its from chunks of rust coming out of the gas tank and clogging the carb.

All of mine have filters between tank and carb ---- I get bi***ed at about this but it saves a bunch of time and lost use of tractors. ---when filter plugs---yank it off and stick another one on and go! ---little plastic ones are cheeeeep! -- and work fine!
The rust is fine enough to go thru the sed. bowl screen and course enough to plug the load needle. Take load needle assembly out and blow air back up in the carb, also blow needle off and go! -- bet it runs!--at least for a while! lol!

I worked on a WD-45 this summer that had a rotting piece of wood in the gas tank that was melting paint into the the sediment bowl. Then my WD I had to take the tank off to clean the rust out and then clean the rust out of the carb when it would only run with the choke open. Never had any timing issues though.

Looks like it is time to remove and clean the carburetor if you have not already.

Having to have the choke closed to keep it running, when warm, is a sign of a blockage in the carb, provided you have a good fuel flow as you have posted.   There are small passages in the carb body that spray carb cleaner and compressed air won't always clear.  If you do not have a set of oxy/acetylene torch tip cleaners, stop by a store that carries welding supplies and purchase a set.  Use them to gently run through all the holes/ports/jets to remove deposits, along with the carb cleaner and compressed air.  When adjusting the float level, I use the appropriate size drill bit as a gauge, rather than the paper measuring tool that comes in most carb kits.

It sounds like you removed the base of the sediment bowl from the tank and cleaned the inlet end, above the shut off valve.  If that is not the case, you might want to do that.  Is the screen in the sediment bowl in good condition?

Here is a link to a Marvel Schebler manual that covers the DLTX & TSX carbs that may help if you don't have any info on them.
