The engine has started to gallop or surge at startup. The RPM's jump so much that the whole truck rocks side to side quite violently. It lasts for about 1 min or so then smooths out. It will repeat this start after start.
Would you any ideas? Edited by DennisA (IL) - 18 Mar 2019 at 11:50pm |

I'd bet that your getting air in the fuel system somewhere. Is this a powerstroke or older IDI? If I remember correctly we had a powerstroke that the drain on the fuel filter that sits on top of the engine started leaking. It would drain the filter when sitting for some time. It would start but run rough like you describe until the air was purged. Also I wonder if a bad glowplug or two would cause a couple cylinders to run rough until warmed up. The powerstrokes have the wires for the glow plugs under the valve covers and they do occasionally go bad.
Just my 2 cents.. Ben |

Mine has been a good starter, even at a -4 with out being plugged in would start by just hitting the glow plugs a few times. Not sure what the issue is now. What year is your truck? |

Thanks for the reply. It's a 1999 Powerstroke. I'll take a look tomorrow and let you know what I find. |

Mine is a 97 F-350 ---has 118,000 miles on it, Had 99,780 on it when I bought it. Right off the bat, had to have new high pressure oil pump, pump gears, new turbo, new glow plugs, plus a whole bunch of other stuff. When temps. got below +55 degrees, forget about starting it. Sat all winter, turns over, NO start. Messed some more today, still nuttin' I can't get up on the engine, ole body won't hack it, and cant reach anything from the ground. can't climb on anything either. Don't know if the injectors are now bad or the injection pump itself, engine always had a sharp knock in it and according to a book, they say that indicates bad injector. I am not gonna tear into it! ---hate diesel motors! Problem is that's the only thing that I can haul my loader with. Explorer won't handle the tri axle trailer.

AC Fleet, sounds like the previous owner didn’t take care of engine very well. Glow plugs can go anytime but injectors should last 300k.
I have 440k on the engine and the only engine work has been 1 set of glow plugs, under valve cover injector wires, turbo and turbo pedestal w/O rings. I believe that good maintenance and quality oils is key. I also use Archoil ar6200 and ar9100 additives. Yesterday I started the truck and it had on issues. It started right up idled perfectly and ran down the road great. This is what’s so frustrating. I’m glad it’s running well, but I also know it will mess up again without warning. I what it fixed and move on, but do you fix something that’s not broke? |

Check the connector on the IPR. That's the round thing down low in the valley on the HP oil pump. It's on the driver's side of the fuel filter housing. Also check to see that the stamped sheetmetal nut is on the IPR and snug. They are known to come off and the electromagnet can slide away from the base of the valve. The IPR connector seal melts over time allowing moisture in the connection and the pins can vibrate and loosen causing a bad connection. Also check the ICP sensor. If it has oil in the connector it's junk, replace it.

The one i had, the wiring under the valve covers went bad. Not available from ferd at the time. Tranny went out at 116000 miles. Dang 7.3 went bad at 117000. Hope you find the problem hope its a cheap fix for you.

What went wrong with the engine? That should have gone 500k plus. |

I am with Dennis here. My 99 has 340,000 miles, one set of glow plugs so far and two sets of valve cover gasket/under cover harnesses. The drain on the fuel filter replaced some five years ago as it failed. had the glow plug Relay Package fail one time so far, light cycled but no power to the plugs. Original injectors, basically all OEM save what was noted. Starts with a double cycle of glow plugs even in extreme cold, do have block heater plugged in when think will need it to ease up on the starter wear.
I would be looking to the filter drain, verify power to the GPs first, then pull the covers, check ALL the glow Plugs for resistance values and replace the cover gasket harness assemblies with any bad plugs. Edited by DMiller - 22 Mar 2019 at 8:10am |

You probably already tried this? If not, try replacing it’s cam sensor. Here’s a Video link about it. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SgKkG0dcY7s Edited by AC7060IL - 22 Mar 2019 at 8:33am |
