Found this site by asking Google What was wrong with my starter. I am an old farmer just playing. I've plenty of experience .....BUT.....The 1944 B has been changed to 12 Volt key...up until this afternoon it started so fast you couldn't believe it. Went to restart after lunch... click, click, so I put the charger on, battery is old but has had no problems, got the hammer out to do some tapping. No luck, took the cover off the brushes to see if I got anything was happening, could see the armature start to move as it tried. I backed the starter out a little to see if Bendix was stuck, same thing. Backed it most of the way out it worked fine. Put it back same deal, did it several times. Sure it's simple but I can't see it.

pull the starter, get a 2 ft pry bar or long screwdriver and try to bar the motor over thru the starter hole... or use the crank... or engage the PTO and turn the shaft... see if the motor will rotate.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

if the motor turns OK, then you probably have a bad ground between the starter and block ( the set screw needs clean metal to anchor), or the battery cable ends are needing cleaned / wire brushed / reinstalled........... also, what kind of cranking system... Push lever or solenoid ? Solenoid is clean and good ? Switch on the starter motor has good contacts inside ?

Battery may have given up the ghost. It may still have the voltage but no cranking amps. Put a load tester on it or hook a volt meter to it and watch the voltage when you try to start the tractor.

Hi neighbor!!!!!!! Welcome to the forum! It's really nice to see someone close by. I live right near the four corners in Bombay! If you need a B hand crank to use or a helping hand, give me a shout! If you're going through stop in and we can talk a little orange (AC or Syracuse)! |
